Review: Green Arrow #1
Now, I am not the most well-versed in Green Arrow. I read #1-12 of the last 15-part series and had mixed opinions, since the entire story seemed to be "Hello, I am Green Arrow, here is the forest I live in and here are all the other superheroes I am friends with who come to visit me in my forest."
So when I saw the DC reboot a-coming, I pre-ordered #1 of the new series to see what it is like.
Today that issue arrived in the post. It's a couple of days late but that's the postal service for you, and now that I've read through it a couple of times, I have to say:
I. Love. Green Arrow.
The first thing I love about the new Green Arrow is his costume and appearance. While previously Ollie looked like some kind of Robin Hood reject, he now has a very high-tech appearance in his belt and armbands, combined with some kind of rule-of-cool in his hood and goggle-mask-thing. And he got rid of the ugly beard thing, which instantly makes it a hundred times better.
In terms of storyline, it's clear that, since it's #1, this is establishing many points that would need to be known and not re-explained later - such as, Ollie still owning Queen Industries but not quite being in charge, instead gallivanting around the world in search of criminals to apprehend. Here's where the high-tech and rule-of-cool come back in - Naomi and Jax.
As I said before, I'm not the best versed in Green Arrow, but since the last series I read had Ollie as a Lone Ranger kind of thing, it gives some different kind of feeling for him to have two 'assistants' to help him along the way - Naomi on the tech side of things and Jax being a weapons designer, creating all the cool and unusual arrows that Ollie uses.
AND WHAT COOL ARROWS THEY ARE. As well as 'punch' arrows or whatever they're called, that knock the other guy down, there's arrows that freeze the area around them, arrows that let Naomi tap into whatever technology they hit, throwing disks that shoot out ropes to bind the opponent and good old-fashioned sharp tipped arrows for... uh, shooting things. It helps that Jax doesn't like making weapons as most of the arrows don't injure the bad guys too much, just incapacitates them for Ollie to make the capture.
In terms of future plot, I reckon it's going to be a lot better that "I live in a forest and here are my super-friends." Especially with the hook at the end of the issue - it seems things are going to get very dangerous for Ollie, very fast!
THIRD EYE PICKS OF THE WEEK: GREEN ARROW #1 *DC RELAUNCH* - The new GREEN ARROW series is one of my favorites of the launch. Holy crap, and it KICKS ASS. What a killer read. Very much in tune with stuff like Mike Grell's now classic LONGBOW HUNTERS, this is a very grim, harrowing look at the Green Arrow, who has no problem with dishing out lethal justice.
