March 2, 2024 - Rufous-crowned Greenlet (Hylophilus poicilotis) Found in southeastern Brazil, eastern Paraguay, and northern Argentina, these birds in the vireo family live in lowland and mountain forests and woodlands. They feed primarily on invertebrates, along with some fruit, foraging alone, in pairs, and in small flocks, sometimes with other species. Very little is known about their breeding behavior, though a bird was seen with green moss in late September and they have been observed in likely family groups of up to six birds.

September 22, 2022 - Grey-chested Greenlet (Hylophilus semicinereus)

Found in parts of Bolivia, Brazil, French Guiana, Venezuela, Colombia, and Peru, these birds in the vireo family live in lowland forests and swamps. Frequently foraging with mixed-species flocks, they eat small insects, often hanging upside down to pick prey from foliage. Their breeding habits are not yet known.

Python のコルーチンライブラリ Greenlet を使ってみる

コルーチン (a.k.a グリーンスレッド、マイクロスレッド、協調スレッド、ファイバ) を使うことで、処理を任意のタイミングで中断・再開できるようになる。 任意のタイミングというのは、つまりカーネルで実装されるネイティブスレッドとは異なり、コンテキストスイッチをプログラマが管理するということ。 これはユーザランドでスタックのコンテキストを保持することで実装されているようだ。 特に、ノンブロッキング I/O と組み合わせて使うことで、マルチスレッドやイベントループを使わずに処理の並列化が実現できるらしい。 まあとりあえず使ってみる。

実行結果は以下。

処理が 2 つのコルーチンの間を行ったり来たりしているのが分かる。処理はあくまでシングルスレッドで実行されているので print の出力が混ざったりもしない。 コルーチンをスイッチした後には、前回スイッチした箇所から再開されているところもポイント。 まあただ正直これだけだと何が嬉しいのかよく分からない。 どちらかというと Greenlet 自体は直接使うのではなくコルーチン + ノンブロッキング I/O を使ったフレームワークを作るためのパーツとしての意味合いが強いんだと思う。 Greenlet を使ったライブラリとしては Gevent や Eventlet などがあるらしい。
