July 10, 2026 - Scrub Greenlet (Hylophilus flavipes) Found in parts of Costa Rica, Panama, Colombia, Venezuela, and Tobago, these birds in the vireo family live in scrub, woodlands, and cultivated areas. Foraging in trees and thickets in pairs and small groups and sometimes joining mixed-species flocks, they are thought to eat arthropods as well as some berries, seeds, and other plant foods. They build flimsy cup-shaped nests from fine fibers, sometimes with green moss on the outside, or from leaves, stems, and grass, or fine grass and seed-down in trees, shrubs, or tall bamboo. Females lay clutches of two or three eggs.

A curious vireo peering down at me from above, singing its distinctive song all the while! On this trip up north, I have become very accustomed to the lively song of vireos. They're singing loudly from sunrise to sunset, a happy backdrop of sound throughout the day. Despite their bold song, the birds themselves are quite elusive, usually staying high in the trees. This individual was feeling more curious than usual, however, and graced me with its presence. I'd say that the song matches the bird quite well!
