Alone but not Lonely, My Perfect Friday
By: LUMALUMA
I would consider myself sociable, I think. But then again I think just leaving the house is an social activity. In all truth I really enjoy my "alone time" but to me time alone doesn’t necessary means staying home. I am an serious believer that quality time with yourself should be spent outdoors as well. Now what exactly can one do alone without looking lonely and pathetic? you might ask, how about doing typically social activities alone. ERR! WHAT?! yeah yeah I know it’s a bit of a scare but you’ll only look lonely if you show the world how uncomfortable and scared you are. So to help you all with the fright of looking lonely, I’m gonna tell you about my amazing day to myself I had last Friday just to get you motivated.
I’ve been sick for a full week and wasn’t feeling really good about myself. I barely had energy to shower and my hair HA! forget about it. So when I finally showed signs of feeling better I decided to take myself out, I thought I deserved it after surviving a summer cold that intense. The plan was to have a picnic in Manhattan. I got all dolled up, grabbed the book I’m currently reading entitled “Our Mutual Friend" by Charles Dickens, packed my blanket and made my way to Manhattan. I decided to head to the Chelsea Piers because the thought of laying in the grass with the view of the Hudson river in front of me would be serene. I got off Christopher Street train stop and made my way towards the water. I was waiting for the light to change to cross over to the pier when I noticed several people dressed in fancy attire heading towards where I was going then a loud car horn sounded and we all turned around to see a beautiful bride and groom come out a limo. Apparently there would be a wedding reception on the pier. I had a small chat with the bride’s aunt and we talked about how fabulous the bride was in her pink heels, which in fact she was. As I searched around for the perfect picnic area I came across a sign saying there would be having an outdoor movie on pier 63, showing “Who Framed Roger Rabbit" presented by River Flicks. The movie wouldn’t start till 9pm and it was 6:30pm so I laid my blanket down and began reading. After an hour passed I realized that I haven’t eaten a meal all day so I went in search of the perfect picnic meal. My ideal meal was something that would satisfy my appetite but not to fulling, I didn’t want a heavy meal to make me feel bloated or sleepy or worst have to carry a doggy bag (GOD! I hate carrying doggy bags). As I wandered around the streets of Greenwich Village I was showered with compliments about my outfit, which made me feel amazing after the ugly week I had. I visited several restaurants, packing away menus for future options then I stumbled across an Asian restaurant named, “Amber", I thought perfect, Asian food always leaves me satisfied. I got the sweet potato rolls with extra rice on the side and three complimentary mints. By the time I got back to the pier it was pushing 8pm so I set up camp and enjoyed my rolls. As I waited for the movie to start I sat and took pictures of the view of the Hudson, watched as the children played, and listened to my neighbors chatter with their friends and families. The sunset across the Hudson river was enchanting and just as the sun set the movie started. The movie was great and the view of the Freedom Tower to my left made the experience even more memorable. I didn’t stay long enough to watch the ending, the water breeze was getting brisk and my eyes were feeling low. As I sat on the train heading back home I never felt more at peace.
