so a ff.net review of Petty Theft (from @deepsearuin) reminded me about something: i don’t think i ever made a post about Foster’s potted plant??
storytime! it all starts with a conversation between me & @greenzaku (who tbh should get like 90% of the credit for this whole concept), attempts to plot an rp were made, and sort of became discussions over whether or not Foster and Acer would get along.
general consensus: not really at first, but something about the way Acer examines various plants and jots down findings triggers some (sciencey) almost-memories for Foster. so he starts following Acer around, at a distance, although making little effort to hide himself.
Acer is (understandably) a bit nervous about this, but over time he realises that Foster’s behaviour is more like that of an inquisitive student than an actual threat, so he starts chattering over his shoulder about various educational and academic things, like a lecturer doing show-n-tell.
Gradually Foster feels more and more at ease, listening intently and responding to the tugs of familiarity from the whole ‘teacher and student’ scenario, moving closer so he can hear better... with the unfortunate side-effect of making Acer a little bit more nervous. So Acer offers Foster a small potted plant, asking for his opinion on it from a scientific perspective, adding that he can keep this one “for further study” (aka it’s a bit of a peace-offering).
In Foster’s mind, that translates to “plant = gift” and “gift = friend”
He’s very protective of his little plant. And his new friend.
