A Brief History Of Piracy

3rd Century BCE - Roaming brigades of sailors become the world’s first pirates by reaching the metropolitan cities of Athens, Rome, and Olympia, storming the town and transcribing copies of popular Greek poems. These original pirates quickly disband when they realize cutting peoples’ heads off is a much cooler way of intimidation.

1620 - Early Jamestown settler Alexander de Albert commits the first reported act of piracy in the new world, by selling handwritten copies of Pocahontas on a tarp outside a busy horse feeding station. When caught, Albert is ordered pay legislators a fine of fifteen boots filled with gold and return the tarp with all unsold copies to the Powhatan Indians. Alexander de Albert becomes a Jamestown hero when he smartly covers the tarp in small pox and hurls it into a busy Powhatan meeting hall.

1926 - The term bootlegging comes into popular use after distillers of illegal whiskey slip pints of the alcohol into their boots and sell bottles from speakeasy to speakeasy. Similarly, the term Lincolnhatters comes into fashion when smugglers would put several Lincoln luxury automobiles under their hats and walk them into illegal car dealerships.

1939 - Sales for James Joyces’ Finnegans Wake are much lower than expected after an advance leak of the book lets readers not know what the fuck is going on weeks before release date.

2011 - Marty L. Balderas downloads a copy of Wasting Light, the latest effort by the rock band Foo Fighters. While Marty was enthused at the download’s completion, he let the folder linger on his desktop for another eight months before putting it on his external hard drive.
