GE Power Supports Transformation of Romania’s Energy Infrastructure

In the wake of an accelerated growth trend in recent years, Romania has decided to embark on a journey towards more efficient and secure energy solutions.

What is needed to make this transformation happen? Technologically advanced equipment, solutions and services to ensure the security and reliability of the energy supply, reduced environmental impact and increased economic sustainability. This is a tough challenge for Central and Eastern Europe (CEE), since 52% of total power in the region comes from coal and 76% of plants in CEE are more than 30 years old.

Another prerequisite of moving successfully through such fundamental changes in energy infrastructure is a reliable partnership. GE has proven to be such a partner as these examples demonstrate:

Power Generation

The success story starts with a state-of-the-art combined cycle power plant in lernut, Mures County. In June 2017, GE Power was selected to provide the core technology for this modern 430 MW plant, which will supply electricity to one million Romanian households. The lernut project is considered Romania’s largest public investment in conventional power in the past 20 years and South-Eastern Europe’s largest gas project in the last five years.

Grid Software

The success story continues in August 2017:  Accompanied by a large recruitment campaign for highly qualified IT specialists and the move to the most high-tech and sustainable office building in Romania - Aviatorilor 8, GE inaugurated its new Grid Software Solutions Center in Bucharest.

The current team of nearly 150 specialists at the GE Grid Software Solutions center provides technical support worldwide for projects such as integration, software development and testing. Moreover, the center is a major contributor to energy grid stability, enabling energy providers to respond quickly to grid demand fluctuations and to ensure security of energy supply.

The Romanian Transmission System Operator (TSO), Transelectrica, initiated an infrastructure renovation strategy to increase grid reliability and security of supply in the region. To support this, GE will deliver grid automation equipment that will support these objectives, reduce unwanted shut-downs and increase the transfer capacity of the grid through accurate monitoring and control of distribution assets.

And this was certainly necessary, given the fact that the Romanian Grid was mainly built in the 1970’s and 80’s, with very few modernization measures implemented  until 1995.

Substations

Since 2005, GE’s Grid Solutions business has received substation orders from customer Transelectrica totaling approx. 190M Euro - the latest three being the substations Focsani, Craiova Nord, Otelarie.  These substations provide the critical connection points to reliably, efficiently, and safely move power from where it is generated to where it is consumed – businesses, industries and homes.

In summary, clean and efficient energy generation, high-performance and reliable energy transmission integrating the latest solutions in GE Power’s Digital Energy software portfolio together with GE’s Grid Solutions portfolio of high and medium voltage equipment, intelligent controls and sensors and value added services, can help Romania become a significant player in the regional energy market and an energy hub for CEE.
