Tried gridding
At the beginning of June, I saw a very pretty cross stitch! And then I stumbled across @mashumaru 's tags:
#guys dont use a pencil to mark your fabric #!! #dont be stupid like me
Don't use a pencil on embroidery fabric, you won't be able to get rid of the marks! Even though someone else said that it's barely visible, I wasn't able to un-see the pencil marks on one of my projects.
However, I found out that Faber Castell Watercolour pencils in grey can be washed out. Do not iron the fabric after using the watercolour pencils, wash them out first! (I used cold or lukewarm water and a little baby shampoo)
This aida for an apple cross stitch project is marked with watercolour pencils in two different shades of grey.
I have used sewing thread for gridding, too.
There was a mistake in the draping of the skirt of this angel and I added some lines to find it. It is easier to make a grid before stitching. This is the second project where I marked my fabric with sewing thread after having parts of it done, as it prevented me from biting/crying due to mis-counting.
With aida it's important to use a small needle to not make holes into the fabric. And to be very careful when you cut the thread after finishing stitching.
There are also water-soluble pens for sewing. I borrowed one in a light blue from a friend who bought a set, but as I haven't even managed a quarter of this project I haven't tried to wash the fabric.
I marked this fabric only a little bit as I didn't have a test strip of aida when I borrowed the pen and the letters make it easy to see if I go wrong.
The stain above 'Spite' is a vanishing marker from a fabric shop that we wanted to try, too. That one did not vanish but discoloured the fabric. Let's hope that it won't leave a trace after washing!
A grid won't prevent mistakes. But it will be easier to find the mistakes!
came here from the historical qeaving/crochet/knitting post, followed bc you made me realise... i can... draw a grid... for cross stiching... i never even thought... of gridding... gamechanger
It really does make things so much easier!
I can hold full conversations while stitching if my fabric is gridded; I probably couldn't do that if it wasn't. Numbers don't like to stick in my head.
Just be careful about what you use for gridding. Monofilament or tailors pens/pencils are best. Thread won't pull out if you stitch through it, and regular pencil won't fully come out. Some people use Frixion pens, but the thing about Frixion ink is that it doesn't actually wash out or go away, it just turns clear when exposed to heat, meaning it can actually show up again if the ink gets too cold. If you're drawing a grid, it's best practice to do a test first to make sure it really washes out, even if you're using stuff that's made to do that.
You can also buy pre-gridded fabric but it's more expensive.
Me: I am getting tired of having to run my gridding thread through this whole project a little bit at a time. Let me run a larger amount through and see if I can make it to the end without having to do it again. My project: instant knot. Me: in the scrubs opera voice...
