dreamtale or reapertale
I’ve never done a human grimm before
And now... it's time for~
THE SEXIEST PAPYRI TOURNAMENT
Again we're ignoring how bad i am at math-- In this tournament, we have two groups of three right off the bat! Who shall win? Who shall lose??
THE CROWSHIPPING TALK HAS SUMMONED ME!!!
the question of how dust would worship death has been in my mind forever and i still haven't decided how to go with it. i understand reaper and grim are based on greek mythology, so maybe a practice resembling ancient greek worship rituals? there are also modern pagan practices for greek gods as well.
though, i do think of murder's creator being korean, so maybe there should be some cultural references to that? i'm not korean, but i believe that chrysanthemums are closely related to death and rebirth in some korean regions. in east asian cultures, marigolds are often used for funerals/shrines/tombstones because they take a long time to wither away. korea also has a lot of different belief systems/religions, so that might prove a bit tricky as well.
however, since murder is a monster living in the underground, his beliefs regarding death and religion are not the same as humans. monsters might have their own belief system (the prophecy is one). so it just turns into a mushy pile of "how the hell is murder going to perform rituals" to me lol
~ crowshipping anon
I suppose it can be a mixture of all three; monster influenced, Greek, and Korean. He can scatter the monster dust on the things that were important to them, and perhaps he leaves them some gold or coin for the equivalent of the ferryman, and and perhaps he can place marigolds and chrysanthemums near, on, or around their important item or otherwise on their dust.
I suppose it’s important to consider just how much time he will reasonably have to dedicate to Death, and how often, and what he could be willing to do that is small, less time and energy consuming, but no less important or valued. (Murder not realizing just so much and truly and deeply loved he is by Death 💕).
And of course, how much he will be able to get away with and hide in Bad Sanses AU, considering he is under the care and protection of basically something like a God of Negativity—at least in comparison to Murder himself.
Not only do we all know that Nightmare is possessive, it might just frankly be insulting or offensive to do worship other God(s) or Goddesses while in the service of another, involuntary or not. Murder likely wouldn’t know for sure, but insulting Nightmare even unknowingly could be dangerous.
Elaborate rituals don’t have to be a frequent thing, considering how Dust is in a little war with the human and will likely be very busy in Bad Sanses AUs—taking into account things like his mental health and physical health, just how much energy he’ll be able to offer and do reasonably on a regular or even non regular basis.
Even as something as sharing a meal with Death—or inviting one or both of them to join him with his meal—can be enough, and could possibly even encourage him to drink and eat more frequently if he is sharing with or offering to his Gods.
The worship and devotional acts doesn’t have to be entirely death or underworld or afterlife related—the simple, mundane things would likely be appreciated, especially if they’re done by Death’s priest(ess).
Even dedicating time to learning more about Death and Their mythology, Their lore, Their history—Them—can be an act of devotion. Any specific self care ritual could possibly be as well—such as washing with a specific scent.
This may actually even be a common worry for Murder. That he isn’t doing enough, worry that having to hide it can be taken as being ashamed or embarrassed, that he isn’t able to do something for Them on a daily basis. Either because of “work” and having to survive such a hostile environment, or simply because Dust is too exhausted to even get out of bed.
Perhaps this is something Death will often try to reassure Their Priest(ess) about frequently, reassuring him that even silent prayer is more than enough for Them—and They are not going to get mad at him, or leave him, or otherwise punish him. They are not Nightmare, and They understand that mortals have limits and lives they must attend to.
I can imagine that being able to perform one of the big rituals is pretty exciting for Murder though. Especially if it comes on the heels of having finally found freedom and enough stability and energy to do it with a bounce in his step and a bright smile on his face.
sorry i don't have any headcanon for killer and/or color, so please accept my meager offer...
insomniac murder and reaper. reaper is too busy with his work so he doesn't have enough time to rest or sleep (does he even need to sleep - he's a god). murder doesn't sleep because he has nightmares or upsetting dreams (because good dreams confuse and make him even more depressed - canon!). under the employment of nightmare, murder feels even less appetite for sleep, because he fears how nightmare can infiltrate and influence his dreams. so he tries to stay awake as long as humanly possible (which is a cruel and unusual punishment under war crimes by the way). if he can dope to not fall asleep, he would totally do that. his internal clock is all fucked up too, from not having a consistent eating/sleeping schedule and traveling to too many universes out of time.
i think it would be cute if reaper tries to help murder to sleep somewhat, like being next to him sometimes so murder can relax and rest, because nightmare doesn't want to be near death. if reaper cannot be there physically, then grim or the crows/rats they send to guard over murder. though, it would be difficult to track down nightmare and by extension murder, what with them constantly hopping universes and all.
~ crowshipping anon, wishing you happy birthday (´,,•ω•,,)♡
Hello crow!! Thank you for the birthday wishes, and don’t worry! I was asking for headcanons about anything and everything, not just killer and/or color.
And I love that sm! A way this could potentially work if Reaper can’t keep consistent track of Murder could potentially be that the crows and rats know and remember him or otherwise feel death around him (either because of Reaper/Grimm or because of all the murders), and so they of course sleep near him.
And Nightmare, afraid of death and like a child born during the 1500s or something (I don’t know when Dreamtale was actually set), perhaps he’s still very superstitious. And crows and rats are associated with death, so perhaps Nightmare stays FAR away from crows and rats, and by extension, Murder. Allowing Murder to get some well needed sleep—even if he may not ultimately sleep.
And if I remember correctly, Grimm was supposed to be the God of like, gentle death right? And sleep is said to sometimes be like a death, so perhaps Grimm’s presence is felt by Murder in sleep—which maybe Murder mistakes for being Phantom Papyrus, since both Phantom and Grimm are Papyri and perhaps both feel comforting in the same way??
Been like, really into Gods, myths ect and I'm fully aware that Reaper and Grimm are based on the two sides of "Death" in Greek Mythology, Grimm symbolising the gentler side of death with Reaper being the gross, disturbing side of the brother's work. It's debatable what Gods actually symbolise these two halves- Thanatos, some people argue Hades, hell, even Persephone is on the roster considering how little we can scavenge up about her, but one thing that's for certain is that Hades is the most well-known "Death" god, whether it be reaping or sowing such events. So based off this, we can conclude that offering such things that one would to Hades and Thanatos would be a safe bet, and funnily enough, most of the well-known offerings are stuff crows like.
Stones, dark jems such as monkstone, coins, and candles.
Fruits and herbs, one of the most on the nose fruits being pomegranates.
Incense choises are commonly winter scents, or just ones that have little scent overall
Flowers, food and from what I could scavenge meat?, pinned butterflies or butterfly wings.
Horns, bones, clean remains of what was once alive. CLEAN is a keyword, don't bother offering it if it's a mess of bone, blood 'nd stuff.
An odd one mostly directed at Grimm I'd assume is offering up small bugs about to die to the alter being used and letting them die peacfully and naturally. A being of calm death prefers such an ending for things around them.
Uh anyways yeah. I can imagine Dust having a rotating alter offerings using a (longer) list like this one.. or maybe he knows it all off by heart. I don't know. GOD I LOVE DUST AND THE REAPERTALE BROTHERS. Death's beloved priest(ess). Sighhhhh <3
Ugh I love thinking about any type of religion or religious practices the utmv may or may not engage in or believe in. Especially when we consider there’s an entire au about the Greek pantheon, and could even be different aus where the characters are gods and goddesses of other pantheons like the Celtic or Kemetism (Color 💕) or Slavic.
Considering I remember hearing somewhere that Murder knows how to set traps (can’t remember for sure), he could make use of any animals he catches for food by repurposing their bones and meat for offerings—after throughly cleaning them of course. And I wonder if he puts any of the coins to use by maybe whatever G he finds in aus that have went through Genocides or are just abandoned.
And maybe Murder, if able, keeps a little journal detailing his journey with Death. Like a correspondence—a back and forth with the gods of Death, learning to understand the ways They communicate to figure how preferred offerings and maybe even any preferences for devotional acts? And I can imagine Murder brings Them lots and lots of flowers, perhaps of the deadly and poisonous variety despite Death’s protests.
And maybe when he’s with Nightmare, he doesn’t have any big or extravagant altars for both safety and convenience, but he does have like a little portable alter in those little mint tins. He places drawings of Death’s likenings, coins, flower petals, bits of bone in there and carries it around everywhere.
Perhaps he makes up for the inability to openly worship in a noticeable way by wearing jewelry of those specific gemstones—even though Death very likely doesn’t have any issues with how he worships now. They’d prefer if he remains safe first and foremost.
But imagine once he gets free and is in the Omega Timeline, able to have a second chance and a new start at life, he rather excitedly and eagerly starts building up a bigger altar to Death and They are very excited for him and just proud of him and all his hard work and progress.
