Hey, Americans - you need to start learning foreign languages.

why? At this point - if you are staying in the US you need to have access to not just American news sources, ideally in a language that is not a primary concern of local censors. If you are leaving the US, you will have an easier time adjusting to a new environment by speaking with people in their native language. And while thanks to colonialism there are plenty of english speaking countries, you are limiting the places you can go if you are not able to communicate in another language other than English. Another aspect is your potential access to a different citizenship. Naturalisation may require knowing the language of the country you want to live in on a higher level. Fluency is not easily achieved and most people require years of practice. If you start now, there is a good chance you can do it. But if you never start, you never will. At last, if you are learning languages you will gain not just practical abilities and access. Learning languages requires learning about other cultures and norms other than your own. It can be an act of solidarity and deconstruction hegemony. It also requires emotional growth by learning how to deal with frustration over not learning as fast as expected and rediscovering your confidence in a different language. It will help you as a person.

I am aware that i sound like a duolingo advertisement. But you have everything to gain if you start today. not having options and being forced to stay where you are and rely on the limited sources that you have now, makes you extremely vulnerable. Do the linguistic education equivalent of tiktok users switching to xiaohongshu/Red note and give yourself the power to choose where you can be and what you can learn by picking up a language.

The fire burned pleasantly under the stove. Little Madlenka enjoyed it it from her spot not too far away to stay warm but not too close either after the mother’s stern look. Madlenka watched her. Mama was standing at the window, peaking through a tiny gap outside to keep the surprisingly cool spring weather at bay.

“Papa?”

The mother turned around and smiled softly at her daughter.

“No, Papa is not home yet.”

Madlenka shook her head like she had seen it others do and grabbed the little toy raven in front of her for comfort.

Yes, yes, Papa is not home yet.

Whatever that home was. As far as Madlenka knew, home was the world and the rest Madlenka did not know of. But she knew of Papa. He was the tallest human, the only one who lifted her so high she was able to touch the ceiling and nearly the sky when it was cloudy. He made her fly like a raven.

“Kra! Kra!” The toy raven rose into the air, high above the floor and over Madlenka’s head. Maybe the raven could see when Papa was coming home so Mama had time to play with Madlenka instead?

“Yes, my child. Kra! That’s what the raven cries!” Mama praised and turned back to the window.

I know how the raven does it, mother. Play with me. Here, have the raven look outside instead.

Madlenka threw the toy at her mother the moment mother cried out in happiness and reached for her daughter, nearly stepping onto the toy at her feet.

“Look who is here after a day of work on the fields, Madlenka?”

The little girl, now save up in her mother’s arms, peaked outside into the twilight.

The tallest man alive made his way through the yard and past the garden, checking if the chicken were secure and finally turning to the house.

“Papa!”

Excited the girl rose her arms and clapped her hands as the door into the house opened and the father stepped inside.

He shook his jacket and kicked off his heavy boots before kneeling and opening his arms.

“Where is my little girl?”

Me? That is me! I am little girl!

Madlenka wiggled in her mother’s arms to be let go and ran to the door.

“Papa, Papa, Kra, Kra, Papa!”

The father caught her in his arms and lifted her up, so high up, nearly to the ceiling like every evening.

“Are you Papa’s little raven, little one? Huh? Flying so high? Well, don’t fly away just yet. There is dinner to be had.”

Madlenka giggled. Papa was always so funny.

She turned around and looked at mother.

Here see, mama! Papa is being funny. I am not flying away. Not before dinner, mama.

Mother stepped closer and lifted her head to give Papa a kiss only to be caught in his free arm, embracing her, and holding her closer.

“Hello my love.” Papa greeted mother. “I missed you.”

“I missed you too, Krabat.”

it is so weird how Boba Fett ended up being raised by virtually every bad guy in the galaxy when his Dad Jango likely had a designated emergency parent for him - Walon Vau.

Why Walon Vau?

Vau and Jango are mentioned to be close several times in the RepCom Series, due to partially growing up together. And as part of the Cuy'val dar Vau could have grown a relationship with Boba from the very beginning. Vau is also a Mandalorian just like the Fetts. And as a bounty hunter he had the ability to find Boba to step up and raise him.

So what happened?

option: they were not able to find one another. Unlikely as Boba was involved in several attention drawing military crises during his teenage years and Vau had the resources and skills to find his charge.

option: Vau rejected Boba. considering Vau's upbringing and questionable parenting skills, it is possible that Vau just did not want to be a parent to Boba. Or Vau misjudged Boba's independence as a sign of not being needed when Boba with all his skills very much needed a reliable and trustworthy adult in his life.

option: Boba rejected Vau. While Vau's lack of parenting skills really could be enough to explain this option, another aspect comes to mind. Boba loaths the comparison to the other Jango clones. Yet Vau claim's his training squad of Jango clones as his sons. Maybe the option to be just one of them was too painful for Boba and he did not want to be a vod among vods.

option: Jango did not plan anything. In full manda'lor arrogance Jango might have never expected to die and never planned for an emergency net for Boba. but even this does not explain why Walon Vau did not seek out Boba considering the cultural expectations of family and taking care of the ade in mandalorian society.

whatever the reasons (aside from this being a plot hole) we need more exploring the WALON VAU - BOBA FETT history. Because Boba Fett growing up alone may be a great sob story for him as a character but is too much of a contradiction to mandalorian values of family and protecting children of fellow mandalorians.

Nikto HC

speaks English. gets extremely annoyed about people who think he doesn't understand well due to his accent.

in fact he speaks several languages besides Russian and English. As a former FSB agent he has an excellent education in *classified* and speaks *classified*, *classified* as well as *classified* fluently.

is not unusually laconic for his profession. due to his training he got taught to keep communication minimal in the field to avoid accidental slip ups.

After getting caught and tortured Nikto worried about his face not allowing him to fit in back home anymore. That never kept him from keeping in touch with family. He is currently trying to figure out how to not scare his dement Babushka with his cut up face. His solution so far is to send letters.

Has excellent handwriting.

Favourite food is pelmeni. if he gets his hands on a bag of pre-made deep frozen pelmeni he will not count how many of the pelmeni he would like to eat but dumps the whole bag into the pot. He never fails to finish those.

Tried to explain to König what smetana is. Has not succeeded.

Secretly nicknames every tank he ever happens to drive as бакчик / little tank.

Doesn't like dogs. They are too loud and aggressive as his most common encounter with dogs are military or police trained canines and that's his sole point of reference.

Read the Metro 2033 series twice. he enjoys how he can recognise the places in the story from his previous Moscow visits.

sometimes he thinks about quitting the military job he has to retire somewhere in a little village where he could read and fish and generally be at peace. but he doesn't feel like it is his time yet. and he isn't sure if he actually would like to be on his own with all his too loud thoughts. So he stays, stuck in the limbo of waiting from something. Or someone?
