Lava Rivers Visible From Reykjavik Airport in New Iceland Eruption This otherworldly sight is the result of another volcanic eruption on Iceland’s Reykjanes peninsula. This is the third eruption of the Sundhnúkur volcanic fissure since December. This was the view of the eruption from Reykjavik airport. Residents of the nearby town of Grindavík were evacuated in January, and may never be able to return. Local authorities are doing their best to prevent damage to key infrastructure, but there is little they can do to stop the flow of lava. Scientists say they cannot predict how long this latest eruption will last. Despite the peninsular being dormant for almost a hundred years, subsequent eruptions could now potentially continue for decades.
