That Gript article citing Cillian as "historically ignorant" is a bit much. Where were these opinions when The Magdalene Sisters was made, or Sinners before that? Or the books, and stories, and testimonies of women and girls who were forced away from their families, or into backstreet abortions, to avoid the likes of what is described in these films/books?
My grandmother was 15 and pregnant, and my granddad was a little older, when they came to England from Cavan - solely because she was pregnant. What was the other option?
It's not historically ignorant - you could perhaps argue it's been embellished upon, and that's fair enough - but these types of things happened. I believe the last Magdalene home was closed in 1996 (correct me if I'm wrong). NINETEEN NINETY SIX, for fucks sake.
There are stories released frequently about what the Catholic church is responsible for. It doesn't ERASE the good some people find in the church, but it shouldn't be cast off as ignorant, as untrue, when it actually happened.
