This #ThankfulThursday, we’re feeling grateful to all the grocery workers out there helping to keep Hagley’s staff (and the rest of the nation) fed during these difficult times. 

This negative, taken around 1939, shows grocer Harry K. Gallagher (1869-1963) at his store, the Gallagher General Store, located at the the intersection of Station Way Road and Baltimore Pike in Chadds Ford, Pennsylvania. Gallagher began operating the store in 1900. In 1944, he retired and moved to West Chester, Pennsylvania, where he worked at the Mosteller department store for 18 years before his death at the age of 93.

This image was captured by photographer Edward J. Seal (1896-1955) and is part of the Hagley Library’s collection of Edward J.S. Seal photographic reproductions (Accession 1971.336). This collection features over 300 photographs taken by the Seal family of Chadds Ford, Pennsylvania during the first half of the twentieth century. Many of these images offer a glimpse into family and town life in Chadds Ford and Wilmington, Delaware during the 1920s and 1930s, featuring Seal family members, friends, neighbors, and employees. Other subjects include the 1939 World's Fair in New York, the artists N.C. and Andrew Wyeth, and local bridges and roads. Best part about working nights in grocery? All the attractive women stopping me while I'm breaking down pallets to ask me where something in the store is. Bonus points? They flirt with me. Gaaaaaahhhh

Oh hey everyone

I know I don’t usually come on here as much as I used to BUT.

I work at a grocery store now.

And only been working about four days.

I’m TIRED of customers telling me what the fuck a vegetable or fruit is.

I KNOW vegetables/fruits TRUST ME.

My moms been force feeding me since I was born.

Don’t tell me what red bell pepper is. Don’t tell me what bok choy is. And sure don’t TELL me what cilantro is. I’m freakin Mexican for goodness sakes. Lol

The rEASON why I’m looking at a mini book is BECAUSE I’m looking for the PLU!

So the company I work for does not offer paid medical leave, and I’ve started having migraines again because of an increase in stress and anxiety because oh yeah, I have to work in a super busy grocery store where people do not respect social distancing at all. I’m terrified of going to work at all now. The customers I shop for either don’t acknowledge my existence, or they pop off on me for things I have literally no control over. Yeah, I’ve had like two or three decent people who thanked me for my help but that’s it. I have to keep working, even though it’s making me even more stressed out and making my headaches worse to the point where my medications do nothing to lessen the pain I’m in. I am so fucking angry and disgusted that I could actually throw up right now. I won’t qualify for unemployment if I quit. I probably won’t qualify for social services because I am able to work normally, and even if I do, I won’t get enough to cover my bills. This is all a bunch of bullshit. It’s unfair. Fuck this broken system. I’m so done.

So, I work for a relatively big grocery delivery company. Two of the major retailers we’re partnered with have started giving their employees a $1-2 an hour raise until the end of April. We’re getting nothing.

My company has done nothing for us. We are not allowed to take tips, as I am an “in store shopper”.

The best they are doing for us is showing us nice comments people have sent in... but also not even for OUR store. They’re showing comments from cities 1-3 hours away.

I am only allowed to take one week off in advance if I am too afraid or uncomfortable to work; UNPAID.

I have to stand in line with the general public without any protection provided to me.

My checkout times (yes, the company times us, even now) are fucking awful because I have to wait for the cashier to fully sanitize the entire belt/keypad and everything before I can step up to checkout. My company is not taking these safety measures into consideration.

If there are 4 people in the staging area for our bags for curbside/delivery, I have to wait until someone leaves before I can stage my order. Still being timed here, might I add.

The food bars in the stores are all shut down, so I have to bring my own food, or pay for an over-priced pre-packed meal that I have no way to heat up because the cafe is closed until further notice.

I have to take all of my breaks in my car now.

People need to stay the FUCK home so this virus can take its course, and so that every part of my day at work can stop being 10x harder than it needs to be.

I am exhausted; mentally, physically, emotionally.

I am scared for myself, and my family members who are at risk.

Pay attention to how certain companies treat their workers right now. That’s all I have to say.
