frogs are in general deeply feared. No one dares to kill a frog, one old women said to me. she also told me, that if one dares to hold a frog in their hand, one is very brave indeed. The person who walks barefoot, and steps on a frog, will express their terror through screaming
ethnologist Johan Nordlander (1883) mytiska sägner ifrån norrland. link http://samla.raa.se/xmlui/handle/raa/8818
an old lady tells a swedish ethnologist during the 1880s about a deep terror of frogs, ethnologists declares that “the terror of frogs” is an widespread belief in all of ångermanland, north sweden landskap.
frogs, apperntly, the most scary things ever.
(i just.... are we really sure this was a general belief. or was this lady just very afraid of frogs? but to other proofs are taken forward, i must assume that frogs in general, was the greates fear of all people of sweden, the original text says “allmän stor fasa” afterall. the text from random mister ethnologists 1883 said so! what is source critism ;P)
originial swedish text
“För grodor har man i allmänhet stor fasa.Ingen vill slå ihjäl en groda, yttrade en gumma. Att våga taga i en sådan och hålla henne i handen, visar stort mod. Den som går barfota och råkar trampa på en sådan, ger sin fasa tillkänna genom skri. “
