au: in 2016, the pop / pop-rock group r5 changes their style to pop-p u n k.
in an interview, the four siblings and their best friend, ellington ratliff, are asked on what influenced their decision...
ross: i don't think it was necessarily, like, this one thing that made us think, "okay, now we're gonna be pop-punk". in a way, it were all of the years we've been a band and obviously this desire of self-improvement, you know what i'm saying?
rocky: [grabs the microphone out of ross's hands] nobody knows what you’re saying, ross.
[ross sighs, rolling his eyes; the group laughs and he ends up joining in]
ross: what i'm trying to say, is, that being a band is basically a journey that is all about self-improvement. and it’s like, in the six years we’ve been a band, we have improved ourselves a lot. this is just another sign of it. you might think it’s too radical, unexpected – but for us, it’s natural. we don’t know where we’re going or where this journey of self-improvement leads, but we can feel when we’re doing something right and this is what feels right for us at exactly this moment.
interviewer: well, that was a great explanation. [laughs] but, there is one little contradiction. i've been doing some quite extensive research on you guys and i've found some material on the start of r5.
riker: [groans] oh god, no!
ellington: [chuckles] i personally don’t see anything wrong with the older stuff, obviously we’ve all been through the puberty since then, but for the age we were back then, it’s okay.
ross: i agree. i think it’s only something to be proud of how far we’ve come.
rydel: [sings quietly] we’ve come so far from the past…
[everybody laughs]
interviewer: yes, exactly that song was part of the material i've found! so when you’re speaking of self-improvement, don’t you think your older style speaks against it?
ross: no, i don’t think it does. back then we were trying to imitate the artists we were looking up to – which is a natural process, you have to start somewhere, right? but today we, like, know where we belong and know what we can do and, what is the most important thing, we know, that whatever we do, we will have the support of thousands, ten-thousands people all around the world – it’s insane, really.
rocky: speaking of support: our fans, the r5family, they have grown up and improved themselves just like we have. it just wouldn’t feel right to sell them the same music we have sold them in 2013, for example.
rydel: oh, and for any people who worry about whether we’re still the same people, as in whether we’re still nice to everybody and thankful for everything that comes our way – we are! our music is going to change, our clothes are going to change, but we’re still gonna be the same softies on the inside we were when we were pop artists. [giggles]
ellington: you guys better not hold that against us or we’re gonna start doing a lot of reaaally bizarre stuff on stage and in, um, other places until you agree to admit that we’re punk rock. [laughs]
ross: another of the reasons why we’ve changed our music genre, is because we wanted to b-
rocky: i think that’s enough with sophisticated explanations. let's talk about how we’re gonna perform our new single for the first time live!
interviewer: well then, you all, get up on the stage and rock our socks!
riker: [whispering in rocky’s ear] she did not just say that lame ass shit and reference-
