3-5 AU
Alright, so in a group chat last week, me and a friend came up with this AU of 3-5. Here, Pearl is successful at channeling Dahlia and kills Elise and Godot. However, Elise manages to successfully perform the Spirit Severing Technique on her before she dies. Maya faints shortly thereafter but swears for a split second that she saw Pearl’s unconscious body.
She wakes up and sees that Pearl is missing; sick with worry, she rushes to the Inner Temple and sees Pearl there sitting over what looks to be some sort of letter. She asks Pearl what’s going on; Pearl is shocked to see her but shows her the instructions and tells her that her mother gave these for her to follow. She goes on to explain that she was successful in channeling the spirit and was told to burn it but was unsuccessful in doing so. Maya asks her who she was planning to channel, Pearl tells her it was a spirit by the name of “Dahlia Hawthorne”. Though Maya doesn’t recognize the name, she is quickly able to put together that she was likely the spirit that attacked her that night and killed the two victims. She tells Pearl to promise not to channel her again. Pearl is horribly confused but says yes.
Maya and Pearl keep each other company on the other side of the bridge. They talk and even make a snowman. That night, when Pearl goes to sleep, Maya decides to take some sort of action. She knows that when the bridge gets repaired, Pearl’s fingerprints will likely be found on the murder weapon. Maya can’t have that happen to her baby cousin so, she sneaks out of the Inner Temple and goes to the garden where the bodies still lay. She wipes the prints off with her robe and proceeds to stab the corpses herself. The horror of what she just did makes her dizzy and she falls unconscious.
She awakens to the sound of the bridge repairing. She looks up and sees policemen walking towards the Inner Temple Garden. Phoenix rushes to her side and shakes her asking if she’s ok. She confesses to killing someone which makes Phoenix’s mouth fall agape in shock. Like she planned, Maya’s fingerprints are found on the murder weapon and she is arrested for the murder despite Phoenix’s protests.
Phoenix rushes to the detention center in great haste. He implores her to let him defend her but she refuses, insisting that she will plead guilty. Phoenix being the loyal and stubborn man he is, refuses to abandon her, and Maya is forced to accept his defense. Unfortunately, she doesn’t give Phoenix much information so he is forced to work this case out himself.
The next day during trial, Payne is the prosecution. He tells Phoenix to prepare to lose as he plans to win this time. He calls Gumshoe to the stand who basically gives a rundown of everything that happened: the murder weapon being found with Maya’s fingerprints, the autopsy report, etc. Phoenix tries to convince the court that Maya would never do such a thing but Payne retorts that all the evidence points to Maya being the prime suspect. Phoenix glowers angrily at Payne.
It is then revealed that the only one that can testify is Pearl. Phoenix says that it would be wrong for Pearl to testify against her own cousin but Payne, wanting vengeance for his past losses to the lawyer, calls her up anyway. Phoenix, unable to offer any alternatives to calling Pearl, is forced to cross-examine her. Here, Pearl kinda functions like 3-5 Maya, she’s confused, scared, and Phoenix feels bad for pressing her the entire time.
She walks up to the stand and is all scared at first but Payne, in a moment of uncharacteristic dickishness, tells her to straighten up. Phoenix accuses him of badgering his own witness and the judge agrees with him.
Pearl’s testimony is disjointed and confused. Phoenix knows if he doesn’t find anything soon, then Maya will be convicted of a crime she didn’t commit. He tries pressing her and pressing her but nothing new comes up. Desperate to find anything, he asks Pearl why she went to the Inner Temple that night. Nervous, Pearl asks him if it has any relevance to the case at hand. Phoenix speaks hesitantly and says that it does because if Pearl was at the Inner Temple, she could easily be considered a prime suspect too as she was the only other living person with Maya during those two days.
Pearl is absolutely horrified and is unable to say anything in response. Before anything else can happen, Maya objects and rushes to the witness stand, she tries to waive her right to an attorney, much to Phoenix’s shock. He tries to tell her that he only wanted to prove Maya’s innocence and find the truth but she isn’t having it. She then proceeds to confess to the crime and begs the judge to hand his verdict down already. Phoenix lets out a mortified scream while Payne is just grinning ear to ear like a demon.
Pearl has no idea how to feel. Why is Mystic Maya at her special someone’s throat all of the sudden? She feels a mix of heartbreak and conflict and it’s painful. The courtroom ends up falling into such a chaotic mess that the judge has to declare a recess so that things can calm down.
During recess, Maya ignores Phoenix beyond trading him solemn glances. She knows what she must do to protect her little cousin and her best friend isn’t going to get in the way of that, simple. Phoenix on the other hand is simply confused. Why on earth is Maya acting so...distant?
Back at trial, Maya is immediately called to the stand to testify with the intention of solidifying her apparent guilt to the court. She states that she went to the Inner Temple Garden that night with the pure intention of murdering the victims. She states that she saw them and murdered them simply because they were there. She stabbed the two of them once and then in order to make sure that they were dead, proceeded to stab them multiple times for good measure. Phoenix can’t believe what he’s hearing. Maya murdering someone because of that? Payne even claims that the defendant’s blood was found on the murder weapon.
Phoenix objects stating that there’s no proof that such an act even occurred. Maya then pulls the top of her costume down a bit and reveals a self-inflicted stab wound in her right shoulder. She claims that one of the victims, in a fitful attempt to save their life, tried to swipe the weapon away and stab her. They succeeded, but she managed to grab it back from them and stabbed them soon after. Phoenix feels defeated. His head is ringing and his heart is drumming.
The judge is prepared to hand down his verdict.
“Very well then, I see no reason to doubt the facts of this case.”
Pearl is terrified for her cousin’s life. But Maya looks surprisingly calm, she even has a happy smile on her face.
“I hereby declare the defendant, Ms. Maya Fey, Guil-”
“OBJECTION!”
Phoenix tries to insist on his client’s innocence despite her claims of guilt while Maya glares at him furiously. Payne laughs at his attempts to defend an obviously guilty client causing Phoenix to glare daggers at him. The judge asks him how he intends to do this to which Phoenix says that he has no idea causing Maya to look even more furious and Payne to laugh even harder. Pearl then nervously raises an objection. She hops down from the gallery to the witness stand and reveals that she saw Maya the day after the murder occurred with a completely clean costume, looking worried.
Phoenix asks her if this is true. Despite Maya’s death glare, Pearl musters enough courage to confirm her statement. Payne asks her why she didn’t mention this earlier and Pearl says that he never asked how the defendant looked the day after the crime to which Phoenix agrees. Pearl turns to look at Mystic Maya and sees her looking even angrier than she’s ever seen her before. She’s confused. Why is Mystic Maya acting like this?
The judge calls for the court to be adjourned so that more investigation can take place. Phoenix and Pearl discuss the oddity of Maya’s attitude but decide to leave her alone for now. They head to Hazakura Temple and go to the Inner Temple Garden. They find her clothes from after the murder, and as expected they were as clean as can be. They continue searching the area and Phoenix manages to happen upon this red and yellow thing with string attached that kinda looks like a necklace. Inscribed on the talisman is a yellow “9″, Phoenix recognizes it from the Magatama Maya gave to him. He hands it over to Pearl for inspection and she reveals that it’s the talisman that the Master of Kurain wears.
Shocked to hear this, he decides to get more answers from the head nun of Hazakura Temple. He looks for Sister Bikini the two find her in the Main Hall complaining about her back pain. Pearl shows concern for her and asks if she needs anything but Bikini says that she’ll be alright, though she is touched by the younger girl’s kindness.
Phoenix asks Bikini about the Talisman and tells her that they found it in the Inner Temple Garden. Defeated, Bikini decides to reveal to the two of them that Misty Fey was indeed Elise Deauxnim’s true identity. Pearl, shocked, concludes that it would mean that Maya killed her own mother but Phoenix tries to insist that it’s not the case.
“She’s been gone for 17 years, and when she returns, this happens!” Bikini cries.
“B-but, that doesn’t mean that Maya did it!” Phoenix insists. Bikini turns to look at him seriously.
“But when you look at the evidence and when you consider that the defendant herself has admitted to it-”
“No! I refuse to believe it! Come on Pearls, we are leaving!” Phoenix demands, not wanting to hear any more of Bikini’s slander. He grabs Pearl’s arm and rushes out of there.
“Ouch, ouch! Mr. Nick, you’re hurting me!” Pearl exclaims. Phoenix lets go and checks to make sure that he didn’t hurt her too badly. Though he didn’t want to believe that Maya could murder anyone, let alone her own mother, in cold blood; it was no excuse for accidentally hurting her. “So, where do we go next, Mr. Nick?”
“We’re going to head back to the Inner Temple to find more clues.” The two walk back to the Inner Temple side and enter the shrine. They look desperately for anything when Pearl pulls out what looks to be a letter.
“Whatcha got there, Pearls?” Phoenix asks, looking curious. She hands it to him. He reads the note, “Hmm, from the looks of things, it seems to be some sort of instructions regarding someone being channeled. Do you know anything about this, Pearls?”
“Yeah, my mother told me to find these. What was weird was that they had already been opened.” Pearl admitted. Phoenix’s eyes widened.
“It seems that she had a plan for you to channel someone to carry something out for her. “ Phoenix noted. He felt a sense of dread for whatever was to come but tried not to let his bias against that horrid woman show.
“Yeah, she even gave me a picture of her! She told me to burn it, but I wasn’t successful at burning that part.” Pearl noted. She pointed to the picture and Phoenix’s eyes widened in horror. He felt as if he wanted to be sick.
“Pearls, do you know who that is?” Phoenix asked.
“No, Morgan called her Dahlia Hawthorne, but that’s about it.” Pearl noted. Phoenix, as if on reflex, grabbed Pearl by the shoulders and started shaking her.
“Mr. Niiick!” Pearl cried. Phoenix stopped.
“Pearls, that woman is a very bad lady. She tried to kill me once before!” Pearl’s eyes widened. Phoenix sighed in resignation and gritted his teeth, “And if my guess is correct, Morgan wanted you to channel her in order to kill Maya too.”
“What?! S-she said it was for the good of the Fey clan!” Pearl looked terrified beyond belief. How could her beloved mother do such a thing?
“I hate to say it...but she deceived you, Pearls. If you knew the truth, you would have never gone along with it and she took advantage of you.” Phoenix admitted. Pearl’s eyes widened in horror and blinked in realization.
“So, does that mean that night when I channeled...her, I was the one who murdered those two people? Mr. Nick, am I a murderer?” Pearl looked at him sadly. Phoenix was at a loss, he had absolutely no idea what to say or do to make this better. However, it did explain why Maya was so willing to sacrifice her freedom. There was only one person that she would ever go this far for, and that was her little cousin, Pearl. His mouth was dry.
“Yes...unfortunately you did, Pearls. And Maya is taking the fall to protect you because she loves you.” Phoenix admitted. Pearl’s eyes looked like they were going to pop from her sockets. Then, she finally started to break down. Phoenix tries to soothe her by pulling her into a warm, tight embrace.
“I can’t believe it! Mother...MOTHER!” She chokes. Phoenix felt a deep hatred in his heart brew for Morgan Fey. To be willing to brand your own daughter a murderer. He’s at a complete loss now and all he can do is offer the little comfort he can to the girl he’s come to see as his daughter. She then looks up at him tearfully, “Mr. Nick, what’s going to happen to me if they find out that I did it? They’re probably going to take me away and call me a murderer!”
Phoenix had never felt so helpless in his life. Two of the most important people in his life needed him and he was unable to do anything. In the end, he could only save one of them and the other one would be locked away in prison for the rest of their life. Phoenix’s eyes stinged as he shed his own tears before he broke out into sobs. They both held each other tightly and sobbed into each other’s arms for what felt like hours. There was no winners in this situation.
“Mr. Nick.” Pearl sniffled, “I’m going to do it, I’m going to confess and insist that they release Mystic Maya!”
“Pearls, that’s so sweet, but you can’t do that.” He tries to say but Pearl bursts off. He can’t manage to catch up to her and when he gets to the bridge, she’s gone completely. He feels absolutely exhausted and then lets out this huge scream filled with all of the pain and anguish currently in his system. He is then approached by a concerned Iris who he tells to go away. Iris, despite being intimidated by Phoenix, tells him everything that had happened, including that Godot had known of the plan but didn’t tell Phoenix due to his hatred. Phoenix asks why she knows of this and she confirms that she was in on it if anything went wrong. Phoenix is frustrated at Godot for keeping this a secret and putting both Maya’s and Pearl’s lives in danger. He storms off and Iris is fully convinced that Phoenix will never forgive her. She is comforted by Bikini.
Meanwhile, Phoenix looks for Pearl, he goes down to the police station and finds her, her eyes pink from crying. She tells her that she tried to convince them that she had done it and Maya had done nothing wrong but they just laughed her off. Unfortunately, visiting hours are over so he can’t even talk to Maya about how he understands what’s going on right now. And Maya’s currently sitting in her cell while all of this is going on; she’s quietly rocking herself and telling her that this is all for the little cousin she’s come to know as her baby sister. Things look extremely grim for all three of them. That night, none of them ate, none of them slept, and none of them drank as the only thing that could quench their thirst was the water of truth served with a delicious side serving of justice.
That day, Phoenix goes in feeling extremely grim. Today, either his best friend goes to jail or the young girl he’s come to know as his daughter goes to jail. Neither option sounds pleasant. Maya on the other hand, is deadset on protecting Pearl and doesn’t care if her life or freedom is thrown away for her cousin’s. They walk into the courtroom silently.
What happened yesterday is recapped by the prosecution. Phoenix wonders who the prosecution will call and he calls the defendant to the stand. Maya’s demeanor is unchanged from the day before as is her testimony. She states that she got blood on her costume and Phoenix points out the testimony they just heard that it was apparently clean at the time. Maya’s teeth grit in anger. She insists calmly that she hid the bloody costume and replaced it with the clean one. Phoenix asks how she would even be able to do that if she couldn’t easily hide the costume, let alone clean it. Maya stammers in shock. Payne asks if she couldn’t have just burned it in the incinerator and Phoenix states that if she had they would have found traces of it in the incinerator.
The judge orders new testimony from Maya, this time, more accurate to what she saw.
“... I refuse to testify.” She says simply, holding Phoenix’s gaze. Phoenix stammers in shock. The judge says that by doing this, she is basically confessing to the crime. Maya insists that that’s what she’s been trying to do the entire time. She was the one who killed them, simple as that. The judge reminds her of the discovery Phoenix made and while Maya admits that it is admirable, they are all the same, futile.
“Maya, are you sure about this?” Phoenix stated, looking at her desperately. She looked unfazed.
“Nick, I’ve never been more sure about anything in my life.” She said in a calm, monotone voice that Phoenix thought he would never hear coming out of her mouth. Phoenix’s face pales and Payne laughs at him mockingly .
“You’re enjoying this way too much...” Phoenix says under his breath.
“Well, since the defendant has refused to testify, I must hand down my verdict, unless either of you have other witnesses to present?” The judge asks. Phoenix and Payne say they have no other witnesses before Pearl jumps down from the gallery and rushes to the witness stand.
“Pearly, what are you-?” Maya says, flabbergasted.
“Mystic Maya, I can’t let you do this!” She exclaims, “M-mr. Your Honor, I would like to testify!” Pearl insists. Phoenix looks at her delighted.
“Very well then, this court shall take a 10 minute recess. For now, the court is adjourned.” Phoenix thanks Pearl graciously for saving him. She tells him that she needs to confess to what happened and Phoenix encourages her to do so. On the other hand, Maya is watching them in cold silence. She doesn’t know what Pearl is planning, but she knows that she can’t let her go through with it. She understood her friend’s motivations but locking up her cousin was not an option for her. She knew what she needed to do and she was going to let nothing get in her way of protecting her little cousin even if the cost was Maya’s life or freedom. And as they walked back into the courtroom, she began to formulate her plan to save her precious little Pearly
Pearl immediately takes the witness stand. She testifies about what happened after the murder and she tells the same story she did yesterday: Maya walked into the Inner Temple shrine wearing a clean costume with a concerned expression on her face. Maya comforted her little cousin and asked her what she was doing over there; Phoenix questions this point further.
“I....I was told to go there by my mother...She left me instructions to follow.” She revealed. Phoenix asks about their nature and she reveals that they were to channel a spirit, namely the spirit of Dahlia Hawthorne. The judge exclaims that that can’t be possible because she was executed the day after New Year’s. Phoenix informs him of Pearl’s ability to channel spirits; Maya, knowing what Phoenix is planning to do, watches him carefully and prepares to strike at any moment.
The judge asks Pearl if she channeled the spirit and she confirms it for him. He closes his eyes in deliberation.
“In that case...I will have to-” He is cut off by a high pitched shriek. Everyone’s head whips around to see that it came from Maya. “W-what is it, defendant?”
“Please...don’t do this...please.” Maya says, her voice raspy. She walks up the witness stand and grips it firmly, “It was ME! I’m guilty! Don’t blame her, it was my fault! She’s not responsible for any of this!” The judge reminds her of her previous motion to waive her right to testimony.
“Mystic Maya...please don’t do this.” Pearl begs. Despite this, Maya looks unfazed.
“Please, Your Honor, listen to me, Pearly had nothing to do with it!” She insists. Pearl argues that she channeled Dahlia and killed the two victims with Maya arguing back that it wasn’t her who killed them, it was the spirit of Dahlia Hawthorne. She gasps in horror of what she just revealed. Phoenix then goes on to reveal the true nature of the plan: a concoction of Morgan’s desires to have Pearl attain the title of Master. She was to have Pearl channel Dahlia that night and murder Maya Fey. Maya’s eyes widened in shock. She was willing to have Pearl be branded as a murderer.
She gazes at Pearl for what feels like hours before pulling her into a tight embrace.
“I’m so sorry...I had no idea.” She whispers softly to the point that only Pearl can hear her speak. Pearl returns Maya’s tight embrace. Phoenix’s heart is warmed at this sight as he was hurt by Maya’s cold attitude as was Pearl though he understood her motivations for doing so. The judge asks why the victims were killed and Phoenix explains that they tried to stop Dahlia’s plans from carrying out and in doing so, lost their lives.
“Hmmm, this is quite confusing... The defendant is obviously not guilty, but that young girl didn’t even directly murder the victims apparently!” The judge comments. Phoenix insists that neither of them have any responsibility and the judge decides to declare Maya not guilty.
Shortly after, Phoenix joins them in their celebratory hug. They felt truly in bliss at that moment and as if they were reunited after being separated for so long. Maya asks Phoenix to forgive her for her cold attitude to which he forgives causing Maya to smile warmly. Pearl then hands Maya the Master’s Talisman and Maya looks shocked. She asks where Pearl found this and she says they found it in the Inner Temple Garden. Maya is in tears and thanks Pearl for finding it. She then promises to become the Master in order to honor her mother and Phoenix and Pearl express their pride in her.
Like always, they go out for burgers. While Phoenix would normally be angry at the emptying of his wallet, he’s just happy at this point to see both of the girls that he cares for so much being safe and sound. They have a pleasant celebration and go home together. It was at that point, that Phoenix realized how much those two truthfully meant to him and that he would be truly lost without them in his life. It was also the first time that he realized his love for Maya; he knew he cared for the young spirit medium certainly, but only now did he realize how much he was willing to go for her. With that, he also learned of his unconditional love for Pearl and how willing he is to protect her. There was no worries that evening, just a peaceful evening of blissful slumber.
