The Amazing Spider-Facts

Spider-Man is one of the most well-known superheroes there is. But with almost 50 years of history, there's a ton of information to be had. Here's a few things you might not have known about Spider-Man:

Spider-Man almost never made it onto the shelves. When Stan Lee originally brought the idea to then-publisher Martin Goodman, the idea didn't go down very well. Goodman's original comments on the character being in high school, for example, were essentially "Kids aren't superheroes, they're sidekicks!"  Stan Lee eventually convinced him to let him feature the character in the last of issue of the "Amazing Adult Fantasy," which they were about to cancel anyway. They took away the "Adult" part for the last issue, and the character turned out to be a hit. 

Spider-Man has had many love interests in his time. His first steady girlfriend was J. Jonah Jameson's secretary, Betty Brant. Other notable love interests include Gwen Stacy, Felicia Hardy (Black Cat) and of course, Mary-Jane Watson. 

There was for a short time a Spider-Mobile. Spidey is almost always strapped for cash, and when car company Corona Motors approached him with the idea of a Spider-Mobile, he reluctantly agreed since he really needed the money. There was a little problem in the fact that he never attained a driver's license, and he ended up wrecking the car. Later on one of his lesser known rogues, the Tinkerer, attempted to use the Spider-Mobile as a deadly weapon against him. 

Spider-Man has had many, many clones. His first encounter with clones was one of his recently-deceased lover, Gwen Stacy. He then encountered a clone of himself who he had to fight. The person behind the cloning was the Jackal, who was originally a professor of theirs who had feelings for Stacy and blamed Spider-Man for Stacy's death. Later in the 90s, Spider-Man would run into many more clones, most notably Kane and Ben Reilly. Him and Ben even became friends for a while and would take shifts being Spider-Man, allowing for the other to have some time off. 

Norman Osborn would return from the dead at the tail-end of the 90s Clone Saga. It was revealed that he in fact had a healing factor and faked his death. (Killing someone who resembled him to be buried in the funeral) He then ran off to France and did lots of things behind the scenes until returning in 1996. One of the first things he did when came back is kill Ben Reilly. 

Spidey's Aunt May was once dead, but not really. The death of Aunt May was originally portrayed in Amazing Spider-Man #400 and was due to natural causes/old age. When they wanted her in the comics again, they decided to use Norman's return as part of the retcon. It was revealed that he had hired an actress to fake Aunt May's death, to manipulate Spider-Man. And that he had kidnapped Aunt May and buried her alive (hooked to a life-support)... In Uncle Ben's grave. Spider-Man got her out of there and she became a normal part of the Marvel Universe again. 

The first supervillain to appear in The Amazing Spider-Man was the Chameleon. 

Events in Amazing Spider-Man #100 led to a short story arc where Spider-Man had six arms. Eventually he found a cure for this ailment with the help of Reed Richards.

Spider-Man is currently a member of the Future Foundation. An organization replacing the Fantastic Four, following thedeath of the Human Torch. (Who requested Spider-Man replace him in his will)

Fifth Beatles

Everybody knows the Beatles, possibly the greatest band of all time. Definitely one of the most highly regarded. They were the Fab Four who spearheaded the 60s “British Invasion” and still manage to be extremely marketable almost 50 years later. The band had four members: John Lennon, George Harrison, Paul McCartney, and Ringo Starr. But their are some who have ridden along their coattails and have managed to be in a Beatle-y pantheon all of their own. I’m talking about the people who have been known as “Fifth” Beatles. There’s been several people to bear that moniker, and I’m about to fill you in on the big ones. (Note that I’m only mentioning people who played music with them, so other people who were important to their careers might not be mentioned, and it’s not out of undermining or forgetting about them.)

There was of course a time, before the Beatles were getting number one singles left and right, that there actually were five Beatles. In the late fifties the Beatles were playing bars in Hamburg and were five members strong, sans Ringo. (Ringo was a member of a band called Rory and the Hurricanes at the time) We had John, Paul, and George all on guitars; Stu Sutcliffe on bass, and Pete Best on drums. 

Stu Sutcliffe was a friend of John’s from art school, and while Stu’s real talents lied in paintings, John really loved Stu and wanted him to be a part of his band. Stu bought a bass guitar with money he won from an art contest and joined the band, learning the instrument as he went along with help from John and the others. He stayed with left the band after they went back to Liverpool from Hamburg, and stayed behind and married photographer Astrid Kirchherr who he fell in love with. He would focus on his paintings until he, unfortunately, died of a brain aneurysm at age 21. 

Pete Best’s mother owned a coffee club in Liverpool called the Casbah which afforded his family some decent money, enough to get Pete Best a drumkit at the very late. The group played at said coffee club and at the time didn’t have a drummer, and they got along and worked out that Pete would become their drummer.  He continued to be there drummer through hamburg, and also at the Cavern in Liverpool for a while. He was fired from the band after George Martin (producer) insisted that they needed a new drummer if they were going to be signed. George Martin originally wanted to put in a session drummer, but the band already knew and were friends Ringo Starr, and asked him to join. He agreed, and wallah. 

Apart from those two, there are a lot of people who have helped the Beatles throughout their career. Including: 

George Martin 

George Martin was the Beatles’ producer, and as such he played a big part in the final product of the band’s music. The Beatles would consult with him for ideas sometimes on a few songs. One notable example is when they were first recording Can’t Buy Me Love, and they would start with the first verse “I’ll give you all I’ve got to give, etc. etc.” George Martin suggested doing an intro with “Can’t Buy Me Love, oh! Love, oh!  etc.” and that’s what they ended up doing. George Martin was also a big part of composing most of the orchestra you’ll hear in Beatles songs. He also played piano on some of their earlier albums. And, additionally, composed the incidental music score for the Yellow Submarine movie. 

The Roadies (Mal Evans and Neil Aspinall) 

Mal Evans and Neil Aspinall were very important as far as technical support and getting the Beatles from one place to another. But apart from that, they both would contribute to a few songs as well. Neil played a Tamboura for “Within You, Without you,” harmonica on “Being for the Benefit of Mr. Kite” and a bit of percussion on “Magical Mystery Tour.” 

Mal helped with the countdown/alarm clock in A Day in the Life, banged a hammer in Maxwell’s Silver Hammer, played several small instrument parts in “Being for the Benefit of Mr. Kite,”  tambourine in “Dear Prudence,” saxophone on “Helter Skelter,”  and even acted a small part in the movie Magical Mystery Tour. Also, both of these roadies contributed to the chorus of “Yellow Submarine.”  

Billy Preston 

Billy Preston was a pretty big musician in his own right in his day, and during the making of Let It Be (Or the “Get Back Sessions”) he joined the band as a keyboardist. He played on several tracks on the album, Let It Be, and also played with the band on top of the Apple Corps. rooftop in 1969. 

Eric Clapton 

Eric Clapton was a great friend of George Harrison. And during the recording of the White Album he played lead guitar on the song “While My Guitar Gently Weeps.” He also contributed to an previously unreleased song called “Not Guilty” which would later appear on a solo George Harrison album, sans clapton. Not Guilty was later released as part of the Beatles Anthology.

Snake Eyes are Forever

Game Dice have existed longer than written language in some form or another. Their origins can be traced back to Asia and they've been around since before recorded history. 

They were originally created using the ankle bones of hoofed animals, such as oxen or goats. They were used mostly for games and fortunetelling, and making decisions.(Such as "Which one of us gets to use the good, state of the art spear?") Later, they would be fashioned from ivory, wood, metal, or stone. (And eventually what we have now, plastics.) 

Dice games were very popular in greece in the upper classes, and were a favorite form of gambling in Rome. So much so that they were banned in Rome except during Satrunalia. Rome is also the the originator of 20-sided dice. 

Also, the markings on Dominoes originate from that of dice, and also find their roots in Asia.

Happy Birthday, Mark Mothersbaugh!

Today, May 18th, is musician and artist Mark Mothersbaugh's birthday. Here are some nice trivia facts about him to celebrate. He turns 61 today

Mark Mothersbaugh is the lead singer for DEVO. He also plays synth and sometimes even guitar, and has co-written most of the songs in their catalogue along with fellow bandmember Gerald Casale. 

He is a High Priest of the Church of the Subgenius, which is something of a parody religion. They praise "J.R. Bob Dobbs" as their main deity and boast being "The only Church proud to pay its taxes" and promies "Eternal Salvation or triple your money back!" It's comparable to the Church of the Flying Spaghetti Monster, in spite of plenty of differences. 

Mark Mothersbaugh has done plenty outside of DEVO, as well. For instance, he wrote the theme song for Rugrats. Did soundtracks for a few commercials, the Crash Bandicoot games, The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou, Peewee's Playhouse, Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs and several others. 

He's also appeared several times on the children's show "Yo Gabba Gabba," usually demonstrating how to draw something.

Friday the Thirteenth

Some of you might have noticed that today happens to be Friday the Thirteenth. A day the superstitious claims is unlucky. Whether or not the day makes you extra cautious are not, a phobia does exist. 

Fear of Friday the Thirteenth is known as friggatriskaidekaphobia. Combining the name of the Norse Goddess Frigga, who the day is named for with the term for the fear of the number thirteen. (Triskaidekaphobia. Tris being the three, Kai being "and" and "Dek" being ten.)
