Production photos from Gruffdog Theatre’s Rhinoceros, by Ionesco, (May 2016). Designed and photographed by Daisy Pearson.
We decided to tell this story using elements of clowning and puppetry, using the cat puppet, a bunraku and marionette porté style puppet, as a motif to join the devised sections of clowning to Ionesco’s script. It was an incredibly complex puppet to make, with naturalistic joints and movements. It was done on a budget of about £50, and largely made from found materials. The set, too, was made from many found objects, such as crates, sawn up, painted and arranged.
