"And … I thought you hated that whole album idea. Did you…did you even buy my single back when it came out?" Bruce gave him a very stern look, which was way more erotic than he probably realized. "I bought 3000 of them," he said, indignant. "It was for a good cause. I gave them to orphaned children." "Those poor orphans."
Well, that exchange (and the whole bit with the song) is of course based on the fact that Burt Ward released a single as Robin, “Boy Wonder, I Love You" (which also has a B-Side, "Orange Colored Sky"). I hadn’t even listened to it at that point, because I’m really bad with second hand embarrassment, and I feared for the worst. (I have listened to it by now. It’s cute and harmless, and Burt Ward doesn’t sing, which is probably for the best. I still haven’t listened to the B-side. XD)
The story goes, the producer asked if Burt Ward could sing and he said “Dude no, have you heard my voice”, to which the producer said, “Let’s do this anyway”, which is what Superman says to Dick in this fic. (Ward’s single was produced by Frank Zappa, hilariously.)
Batman and Robin in “He Would Never”/”Come Fly With Me” are not supposed to be West and Ward, but they are defo supposed to be Silver/Bronze Age types, so it really fit. And I also really love the idea that superheroes are kinda celebrities in their world, and would be approached for stuff like recording an album. And then of course Superman would turn it into a charitable affair.
I imagine Dick has a less grating voice than Burt Ward does, and his singing is probably decent, but with someone who is as great at things as he is, it’s amusing to imagine him being not great at something. Like singing. I imagine his single isn’t great, and super corny, but probably okay to listen to.
As for Bruce’s reaction, I always think that he’s very blunt and unsentimental, but a really sweet guy underneath, and he really fucking loves orphans (in a non-creepy way in this case), and he really fucking loves Dick (in a way that’s probably a little more creepy at that point). So he gives to the orphanage while also supporting Dick’s music. He’s being honest when he says that Dick’s love song for him is not great on an artistic level, but he’s supportive anyway.
(And he did keep one of the singles for himself.)
