Fun fact I really dislike the “well of COURSE I haven’t read/watched/listened to [Thing I arbitrarily hate]” trend
Of course you don’t have to engage with absolutely everything, and if you know something’s going to be triggering or just shitty those are both other great reasons not to consume that media.
However shit like “John Green books are all about Manic Pixie Dream Girls!!!” And “Disco/classic rock is trash and it’s all boring!!” Like my man you miss out on so much by categorically shitting on things without ever looking for something in that category you might like.
From experience? At different points I hated all of the above for no good reason. I got into classic rock when I started listening to Queen because it’s varied but largely goes OFF in a way that sets their music apart. After that I found a bunch of prog rock which is dug from a similar vein. I got into John Green books because I got into John and Hank’s other content first, not realizing who they were, and found that (even though I don’t 100% agree with them on everything) I agreed with a lot of what they said. WAY more recently? Disco’s got some BOPS.
I was just told that John Green books are “stupid young girl things” (love that misogyny) and I was a young nb who violently distanced themselves from feminity assosiated with their age group. Disco is vapid and slutty. Classic rock is outdated and only for boring pretenuous assholes.
This was a long post but please explore things you haven’t dove into that much. I’m still trying to fully learn this lesson but it really is more fun to investigate these things than it is to go straight to shitting on them.
