I'm not sure if you've answered this one before, but I need advice about how to forshadow/write/reveal a toxic parental relationship (in my case, mother/daughter). I have expirence with this first hand, but I find it difficult to put into words. By the way, you and your works are awesome! Keep it up! 💙🐱
Tips on Writing Toxic Parent/Child Relationships
I’m afraid I don’t have personal experience with this sort thing, but I can talk about how I write my abusive mother/daughter relationship, and maybe that will give you some ideas.
If any of my followers can point us to blogs, posts, or other advice that helps, that would be appreciated!
1. Word choice. A toxic or abusive relationship can be a hard thing to write, especially if the character is as manipulative as Dr. Agau is. Choosing your words carefully can build up a specific tone for the relationship and the interactions they have. This works especially well when you build up an entirely different tone for other relationships the daughter will have.
2. Your reader will know what a non-toxic relationship looks like, but your character probably will not. Readers will know when the mother is being toxic towards the daughter, but your character might just accept it as normal because it’s all they’ve ever known. That’s the case with Beth and Agau--Beth doesn’t know any better. Her ignorance plus her love for her mother lets Agau manipulate her however she wants.
If your daughter character has realized that her relationship isn’t a healthy one, then things (like how she thinks about her mother) might change. Again, I don’t have personal experience, so I can’t tell you how to write this, but I would advise considering how your daughter character sees the relationship.
2.5. Based on what she knows, it might be hard to write a “reveal” for a toxic relationship, unless your character is not living around her mother any longer. If that’s the case, you’ll want to do your research on how toxic parental relationships affect their children later down the line--habits they make, how they approach friendships and romantic relationships, etc. You can work those things into your character before she talks about her past and her abuse.
When she does finally “reveal” her past (probably by opening up to another character), then the traits you’ve written her with so far will make sense.
3. A toxic relationship is built up over time. Maybe you don’t know how to put this one particular scene into words, but you can always fix that in the editing process. Toxic relationships have patterns and trends that happen over many scenes, so the words you might not have now might show up later on.
Not all of these scenes have to be in the story, mind you. You can have knowledge of how these characters have acted in the past and show the consequences of that in the current narration.
For example, Beth knows that Agau expects her obedience because she’s been punished for not obeying before. She also knows that Agau dictates her activities and routines every day. These things aren’t explicitly shown in the book, but the reader picks up on it through the narration. Lines like “She remembers what happened last time she didn’t do as Agau told her” and “She hates this morning routine, but nothing has ever gotten her out of it.” will show your reader evidence of past and continuing abuse.
4. Probably obvious, but it deserves saying: make sure your character is developed and fleshed out beyond her toxic relationship. Obviously this relationship will have affected her and influenced her greatly, but don’t let it define who she is as a character.
I like to think of it this way: can you describe the daughter as a person and as a character without bringing up her abuse? If you can, then that’s good; if not, you have more work to do.
I’m not a perfect person or a perfect writer, so if I’ve said something wrong or offensive, I do apologize and I do welcome polite corrections. But I also still hope this list helped you out in terms of giving you strategies on how to write your characters.
