I just found out that the original definition of xenogender includes the phrase “cannot be contained by human understandings of gender”, and it’s really bothering me.
Does that mean that xenogenders can’t be understood by humans? Does that then mean that you have to be nonhuman to some extent to understand them? But many users of xenogenders don’t consider themselves to be nonhuman.
What if humans don’t understand a gender now, but they come to understand it later? Does that gender then cease to be a xenogender?
Did they just mean “can’t be contained by male and female” (which is what some people seem to think it means)? If so, that’s not a very useful term, because it’s the same as nonbinary or abinary depending on how you take it.
This would make more sense if it was not intended to be used as an umbrella term, but the original definition also says “more concerned with crafting other methods of gender categorization and hierarchy such as those relating to animals, plants, or other creatures/things”.
I wish I had the vocabulary to distinguish between “I’m using these concepts to approximately describe a very human gender” and “I feel that my gender is aligned with these concepts”. I’ve felt both, but the former is a bigger and more consistent part of my identity.
