don't chase the rabbit! 🐰
summer before 5th year
the pads of kyungsoo’s fingers ran over the bumps and crevices of the rose colored metal, and he brought it up closer in his line of vision to study the details that were put into this piece of jewelry. he hadn’t thought of this idea until his grandmother mentioned it, a comment to make joohyun ‘feel like royalty,’ but he didn’t expect his grandmother to take the saying literally and encourage him to choose a design in the shape of a tiara. it was simple, with enough diamonds on it to be sophisticated and not flashy, which was along the lines of kyungsoo’s style as well.
“it barely fits my fingers.” he commented, sliding it on until it stopped at his lowest joint. he knew that the ring was not for him, but he couldn’t help but try. “how will joohyun be able to wear it?”
“believe me, i have been doing this for far too long to make a mistake. she’s still growing, just like how you are too.” his grandmother’s fingers reached over to run through the dark strands of his hair, newly cut and easier for the older woman to play with. she was always more affectionate than his own parents; kyungsoo was used to shying away from physical contact, but grown to like it when it was her.
but his brows still knitted together as he swam in his thoughts. “she likes sports more than i do, and she’s going to try out for the quidditch team this year. it would probably be hard for her to wear while she’s riding on her broomstick.” kyungsoo placed the ring down on the table, preventing himself from adding any more fingerprints onto the smooth surface. “i am worried that she might lose it, or that it might break.”
“then i have an idea for her to keep it safe.” a flick of her wand later, and a gold chain that matched the ring fluttered in between them. ah, so maybe not on her finger then, but around her neck. the ring was held up, and the chain threaded through the opening before placing itself in kyungsoo’s hands. “this would be a good way to solve the issue.” with a smile, she glanced at the clock and flicked her wand again to clean everything up. “now go, she’s coming soon.”
he smiled back at her and bowed politely. “thank you, grandmother.”
she shook her head and gestured him closer. “no no, for something like this, you have to come here for a hug.”
an hour filled with anticipation and worry later, kyungsoo changed into something nicer for joohyun and her family’s arrival. with their parents occupied in the dining hall, he escorted the gryffindor outside in the garden, surrounded by the rose bushes and rustling leaves. “i have something for you.” kyungsoo held onto joohyun’s open hand then, and slid on the ring without the chain onto her finger. his grandmother was right after all, a perfect fit, and he smiled warmly at his fiancee.
