Heading for Oakland, California with a Buy War Bonds coach is train no. 39, the Westbound Exposition Flyer, with Western Pacific GS-64 No. 481 serving as the motive power. This scene is taking place just a few years before the Exposition Flyer would be replaced by the famed all-streamlined California Zephyr train in 1949.

"Altamont Golden Hour"
Western Pacific GS-64 No. 484 leads a westbound freight train through Altamont Pass on a cool summer morning. When steam operations ended on the Feather River Route in 1953, No. 484 and two other GS-64s, No. 481 and No. 485, would be sold off to the Southern Pacific as a source of spare parts until they were scrapped along with the other WP GS-64s. Despite this, No. 484's tender, which was used in later years under Maintenance-of-Way and rotary snowplow service, is now at the Western Pacific Railroad Museum in Portola, California. Altamont Pass on the other hand still sees regular rail traffic in the form of Union Pacific freight trains and Altamont Corridor Express commuter trains that use the former Western Pacific line.

Western Pacific GS-64 #481
I’ve always liked the look of Western Pacific’s GS-64’s with their elephant ears.
Southern Pacific ordered the GS-6 from Lima during WWII as a more austere version of their famous line of 4-8-4’s, lacking the side-skirting and colorful Daylight paint scheme. As such, they were nicknamed “war babies”.
The Western Pacific was in need of more motive power, so six of the GS-6’s were diverted to the smaller, power-starved railroad and designated the class GS-64. These six lacked any SP-patented features but were given boosters in the trailing truck. They were later fitted with smoke deflectors. When the WP was dieselized, some of this class was sold to SP as sources for spare parts without their tenders.
