Gargoyles Liveblog!

Although I have seen Gargoyles a couple of times before, I never did so carefully and it's been a while. This liveblog is about experiencing the show as it exists without being beholden to the comics* or Word of God, but on its own merit.

When I am done with the liveblog, I may have more interest in facts and trivia about the show. Or I may ask a question and state I want an answer if I really do want the facts. Generally you will probably find me interested in character-motivation/development stuff that I will ask about. But other than that, I am not particularly invested in things I can't learn from the show as the show tells it to me. That includes things the show reveals but I have forgotten/haven't gotten to yet.

Because like I said, I'm watching the show on it's own merits without approval or help from supplemental materials. (This goes doubly for any fics I may do where I'll at times be entirely uninterested in being canon compliant.)

So absolutely feel free to ask me about/talk to me about major spoilers that I would obviously know and remember, but please don't worry about correcting me or bringing to the table something I seem unaware of.

*I haven't read any of the comics and only know some very basic things about it, the only of which I'll probably really care about is Lexington being gay. And I have not listened to any Podcasts or Behind the Scenes things from the creators.

A somber man reading somber material (don't come for me; I haven't actually read Dostoyevsky, but context implies it okay), and Elisa makes a joke because ffs this man needs some humor and lightness in his life, and Elisa will at least try. I love how concerned he is that she might not have understood. And he doesn't crack a smile even though I do actually think that was a bit cute. Because Goliath is a wonderful but dramatic little bitch XD Then again, to be fair, sometimes things are shitty, and another person can't just make it right.

This is all still very fresh for Goliath, so like, okay. I get his feelings. And I also get the impression of like, what I said before. Elisa isn't one of them, but she does fit in. What are the chances he's saved this moping for her? Particularly since she's the one who really pushed them to leave their ancestral home. She was a driving factor and she doesn't rely on him the way the rest of the clan does, so he can ask her to face these emotions with him. It's actually kind of touching.

Interestingly, Elisa's words to him have an echo of what Matt had jut been saying to her. What's done is done, and it sucks, but let's make the most of what there is.

That said, have some self awareness Elisa. Lol. That 'gained a library' joke just doesn't land when Xanatos also had a nice looking library we saw last episode and we've just seen the state of where they're living now, where Hudson is just... sitting around... doing nothing until she brought the TV.

I love her, but she's got some self reflection to do as well XD What a nice little parallel for them to throw at us here. lol

It's interesting to me that the reason in Xanatos's mind for Owen's winning is that Owen changed something rather than Xanatos having been in prison for several months and unable to spar like this. He could probably have been working out in the gym or whatever, sure, but I'm sure he wasn't able to keep up with sparring.

But that is not his thought. Instead of thinking about what prison might have cost him, he thinks that Owen was using that time to best Xanatos. In reality, it is probably a little bit of both, but with Owen having taken enough hits from the Gargoyles that he wants to do better against them. That and I enjoy the thought that he watched MacBeth best the Gargoyles in the last episode and went 'I'm learning what he knows.' XD

And Owen doesn't admit to training harder or challenge Xanatos's assertion that that is the major changed factor. He just offers to lose. What does his boss want? And I LOVE that Xanatos is having none of that. It's absolutely in character, but he takes it a step further from 'don't you dare' to 'I would fire you.' He may be all about the theatrics, but he's going to make sure he does it right, and he can't do that if he has a muddled view of how his audience will see the script. He needs proper editors. =P XD

This is such a satisfying moment for Owen. He has been waiting to shut Elisa down for some time I can't help but imagine, and this just felt so good. The way he BODY BLOCKS HER LMAOO

Please know that I am fully aware that I am absolutely a nerd!

Something going on here which I ADORE is that Owen is holding martial arts fighting posture while Xanatos is not. He also is making noises when he attempts to strike. Granted, I don't know if Xanatos would be or not, because he doesn't even get an attempt in here. Owen comes at him and that's pretty much it, game over.

But that's how real fighting actually usually goes from my understanding. The one willing to commit the most fully—likely looking/sounding silly in the process—is going harder and that commitment gets them the win. Xanatos looks all cool and all on his first successful dodge, seeming to be putting barely any effort in, and he pays for it. Love it. Chef's kiss. You go Owen!

And honestly it's that about Owen that takes him from just some other stoic, efficient assistant type to a really interesting character. Many of those stoic characters avoid appearing ruffled at all cost, but if being ruffled is more efficient, Owen will always choose efficiency over appearances. Or... so far it seems.

And Xanatos is into the performance of it all. So like, this really tracks for both of them. Love it!

As the battle goes on with the Steel Clan, they're all pretty much having their asses handed to them, and Brooklyn is the first to really get a chance at an offensive strike. I think that's kind of cool. The show is not trying to treat all of its characters like they are equal. They get their strengths and weaknesses. Broadway and Lexington just aren't on the same level as being a warrior as Brooklyn is, and I really like that this is consistent even when it's not specifically relevant to what is happening.

Sadly, Xanatos prepped his steel clan for direct contact with the enemy. Poor Brooklyn.

Elisa sees the gargoyels take off and rushes after them. It's sort of funny to me because there's really nothing for her to do here except be in the know, and she could get that from just... talking to the gargoyles later. But she cannot bear to be left out. I certainly believe she thinks she could be important in whatever takes place moving forward, but also how? If she would stop to think and also consider what it means to have a tag-along she's not sure they can trust yet... maybe she'd just... wait XD

And in the meantime, Goliath is holding everything close to his chest. Two people a little too caught up in their emotions just now. Goliath would talk about it with his clan, and I think before too long, about what Xanatos said. He's trying to collect his thoughts.

Only, woops nope. Xanatos doesn't want to see him doing that!
