Orion Underway Recovery Test 5 (URT-5) - Orion Boiler Plate Test Article (BTA) loaded onto USS San Diego by NASA Orion Spacecraft Via Flickr: The test version of the Orion crew module has been transported into the well deck of the USS San Diego at Naval Base San Diego in California. NASA, Orion manufacturer Lockheed Martin and the U.S. Navy will head out to sea with the Orion test spacecraft aboard for Underway Recovery Test 5 (URT-5) in the Pacific Ocean off the coast of California. During URT-5, the team will demonstrate and evaluate the recovery processes, procedures, hardware and personnel necessary for recovery of Orion on its return from a deep space mission. Orion is the exploration spacecraft designed to carry astronauts to destinations not yet explored by humans, including an asteroid and NASA Journey to Mars. It will have emergency abort capability, sustain the crew during space travel and provide safe re-entry from deep space return velocities. Orion is scheduled to launch atop NASAâs Space Launch System rocket in 2018. For more information, visit www.nasa.gov/orion.

The Rotation Processing Surge Facility at Kennedy Space Center is the first step in the prelaunch processing flow for Solid Rocket Boosters. Built to handle the SRB’s for the Space Shuttle program, the RPSF is now getting ready for the longer, but otherwise identical boosters of the SLS program.
When we visited March 22, engineers were undergoing practice rotating a booster segment from horizontal to vertical and back again. Inside one of the test cells, an aft skirt, aft segment, and engine nozzle were vertical, undergoing processing. The first segments arrived January 21, with the rest of the booster pathfinder arriving February 23.
Engineers and technicians are conducting series of lifts, moves and stacking operations using the two segments to simulate how the boosters will be processed before a SLS mission.
The RPSF was mothballed following the conclusion of the shuttle program in 2011, but was reactivated and renovated in late 2014 to prepare for SLS.
