“Gucci meme” by John Yuyi (江宥儀). 2017.
John Yuyi is a Taiwan-born multimedia artist currently based in New York City. In 2017, John was selected to be a part of Gucci’s now-viral ad campaign #TFWGucci, and her work alone has amassed over twenty thousand likes on Instagram, making it one of Gucci’s most popular posts to date.
Predating this project, however, John herself was no stranger to working with fashion, having earned a degree in Fashion Design from Shih Chien University in Taipei, after which she left for NYC to intern under Jason Wu. Since then, she has evolved to become an artist and fashion designer in her own right, having released wearable art in the form of a swimwear collection and temporary tattoos. By combining aspects of social media and luxury fashion in her work, John pays homage to the body as creative outlet and fully recognised means of expression.
