Like-- Hugo has a habit of doing things that aren't morally sound. So what if he pickpockets a few people as they pass, or fudges the truth a bit to garner the sympathy of a shopkeeper? They're low on money anyways, he's HELPING. Meanwhile Varian's used to living under the strict rules of the royal family, the second he acts out again he's done, and sometimes he feels like that's just how it is for everyone, that it's normal.
So he lectures Hugo about it, even IF they need money he doesn't want to steal from someone who may need it. Hugo insists he's made sure to steal from clearly upper class people, all to get Varian OFF his ass, but apparently even then he still sees it as morally reprehensible.
Hugo takes it as a misunderstanding between classes. Varian's mentioned that he's close with the princess, and that his father was a village leader, so based on that and the way he's dressed its only fair to assume he's well off, so he just doesn't have an idea of what real desperation is. Hugo's trying to keep them from experiencing that torture, this is how he shows he cares, and since Varian's a rich goodie two-shoes, he won't let him.
Except, you know, he's not, so when Hugo calls him out on it, as well as his general moral high-groundness, it lands in completely the wrong way. Then Hugo says something Bad, either something about his dad, or something about him being selfish, or not as good a person as he says he is, and then Varian's kinda thrown back into all those lectures he got from just about everyone in his life, that he has to think of everyone and never think of himself.
Suddenly Varian tells him that if he wants to go out shopping for supplies at the next town, he'll stay home, and he won't question if Hugo comes back with the same amount of money as when he left. The total 180 is kind of jarring,,, now Hugo's confused, and kinda worried.
