Theory: The Gumlump Infestation Would Have Been Worse Without Piper Adopting Pudding

I made various posts about how I think that the Gumlump infestation wasn't Piper's fault. I would like to expand this by saying that I believe the Gumlump infestation would have been worse if Piper didn't adopt Pudding.

There is a lot of magic in Drake City, and many of the technology used in the city relies on technology. So, if Pudding was allowed to be free in the city, he would have various things to feed on and duplicate. Because of this, even without Piper inadvertently feeding Pudding magic, Pudding would still have magic to eat and would multiply. As this would take place in a large city instead of contained in one building for a while, it would be more difficult to round up the gumlumps. Important infrastructure could also be affected.

Knowledge would also be impacted. Malvaron and Doug saw the gumlumps and told the Mysticons about them. If the gumlumps were in the city, they would likely be more spread out, so sightings could be sporadic. Also, as none of the Mysticons or Serena knew what gumlumps were, it's possible that the public doesn't. So, if they saw a Gumlump approaching something magical, they wouldn't know to keep it away from the magical object.

Now, I'm not saying that Piper or any of the Mysticons knew what they were doing. I am fully convinced that it was just luck that Piper found a Gumlump and wanted it as a pet, and that the other Mysticons allowed it. Still, while it was bad luck for the Mysticons, I believe that it was good luck for Gemina as a whole.

Why Piper isn’t responsible for the gumlump infestation.

The show makes it seem like Piper was the one who caused the gumlump infestation (Nova Terron even blamed the Mysticons for it). However, from what we know of gumlumps, and how Pudding (Piper’s original gumlump) appeared at the pet store, I believe that the gumlump infestation may have happened with or without Piper, even if bringing home an animal you don’t know as a pet is a bad idea. 

Pudding found his own way to the pet store, so there was at least one gumlump that Piper didn’t create. Since gumlumps multiply by eating magic, and magic is everywhere in Gemina, it would be very easy for Pudding to multiply on his own. And since it seems like not many people know what gumlumps are (none of the Mysticons did), they may not know to keep them away from magic. When people do figure it out, they would have already had the chance to spread around the city, so it would be harder to contain the infestation. 

While Piper may have made it worse by giving them magic without realizing it, how much of a role it has is hard to say. While there may not be as strong of magic as the things Piper had, the infestation would be less contained, as they would be in the city right away, instead of being contained in Piper’s room. 

In summary, while taking an unfamiliar animal as a pet is a very bad idea, the gumlump infestation may have happened without Piper.
