Belle Gunness

Belle Gunness, born Brynhild Paulsdatter Storset, was a Norwegian- American serial killer active in Illinois and Indiana between 1884 and 1908. Her victim count is thought to have been at least 14 although some state her total to be closer to 40. Gunness supposedly died in a fire in 1908 although it is commonly believed that she faked her death. Belle Gunness married Mads Sorenson in 1884, the couple had two insurance payouts from their shop and home burning down separately. Sorenson later died from a cerebral haemorrhage and Belle collected his life insurance. married Peter Gunness in 1901, Peter died 8 months later due to a skull injury, his death was ruled to be an accident. After a fire at Belle’s home in 1908 bodies were discovered which were believed to be Belle and her children. Further investigation found ‘soft depressions’ in the pigpen and digging found two hands, two feet and one head, recognised to be a man known to have had correspondence with Belle. Further digging of the land uncovered torsos, hands, arms, human bone. The bodies had been butchered in the same way- decapitated, arms removed at the shoulders and heads severed at the knees. The skulls showed evidence of blunt trauma. After finding the parts of 5 bodies on the first day and 6 on the second the police ‘stopped counting.’ Most of the remains were never identified. After Belle’s crimes came to light the farm became a tourist attraction. Although she was pronounced dead in the 1908 fire this was unconfirmed and sightings of her were reported in the area long after the fire. She was never apprehended and DNA tests recently performed on the headless corpse found after the fire were inconclusive.
