“I feel like your pet, sometimes,” Valentina says another night while Cecilia cards through a stack of bills, a cigarette hanging from her lips.
“Is that so bad? To be owned, be handed everything you could ever want, ever need?” Cecilia poses, glances over her shoulder to her. “Nobody pities a spoiled pet. They pity a stray.”
It quiets her down. Teaches her not to involve her feelings – reminds her, rather. Cecilia has broken her in many ways, facets of her that had once kept her safe not nearly enough to deter her. Cecilia's a bloodhound, a predator, sees too much and not enough. Valentina likes to think she knows her.

It’s a cruel joke on someone’s behalf.
Perhaps her mother’s, for having made her the namesake of the very day of romance. Maybe Valentina's own, for never lowering her standards from some hypothetical prince charming in possession of a calendar and the slightest sense of initiative. For now, there is no prince charming, and there will not be for the foreseeable future.
However, there is Cecilia.
