Alrighty. Here goes.

1: favourite composer

One of my all time favourite composers is michael league from snarky puppy, but that’s like not classical at all, so I’d say maybe holst?

2: favourite instrument

I actually think it might be french horn. but don’t hold me to it

3: piece you last listened to

I’m on a stevie wonder binge atm, so ‘I Wish’ but again that’s not classical. I did walk past a lady singing the 1812 overture to her kid at the shops yesterday.

4: favourite type of piece (concerto, symphony, sonata etc)

Symphonies yo (and jazz suites)

5: favourite section of the orchestra

I’ve got a lot of love for the low brass as a whole. but if I had to narrow down to one section, I’d say oboes. they get some of the best parts ever

6: least favourite composer

idk bruh. music is music. hard to pick someone

7: least favourite instrument

Eb clarinet

8: instruments you play

[Classically] violin, viola, flute. [everything else] saxophone(s), bass guitar and piano (poorly).

9: instruments you want to play

French horn. and you know, the rest of the woodwinds coz doubling

Didn’t I already answer this? ok, you get my second fav. double basses and contra bassoon

11: least favourite instrument

Again. why is the here twice? my second least fav is probably classical saxophone. like, why do you exist?

12: favourite piece

Bruh.

idk. this is hard

16: favourite era of classical music

I really enjoy playing the “modern” classical stuff. Like grainger, and holst and vaughn williams and stuff like that.

17: conducting or composing?

I can’t do either, but I’d like to have a go at both. but if I had to choose, I’d probs go composing

18: best piece you can play

idk, my HSC rep was pretty full on. like the hardest was probably a movement from Mike Mower’s latin flute suite (forgotten the actual title, soz).

19: favourite string instrument

Viola and double bass are tied for me. they both get the least love but they really deserve it

20: favourite brass instrument

French Horn

21: favourite woodwind instrument

Tie for flute and sax duh

22: favourite percussion instrument

Can’t choose between timpani or bass drum

23: favourite musical effect (pizz., con sordino, con legno etc)

Open-hole pitch bending and gliss’ on flute are a pain in the butt, but sound A+ (haha ‘butt but’)

24: favourite tempo speed to play

any derivatives of 60 bpm (120/180 etc) are tip top. like I think there’s an actual scientific/psychological reason for it. idk google it.

25: fastest you’ve had to play

I played a tune with a tempo make of 300 once.

26: last concert you went to

Classical; last friday. in general; last night. James Greening: ‘Greening-from-ear-to-ear’ (tip top stuff)

27: last piece you played

pretty sure it was a christmas carol. ‘Santa Claus is Coming to Town’

28: last composer you played

^^It was a bruce springsteen version (its as good as it sounds)

29: program music or absolute music?

idk what this means? Like digital or acoustic? (if so) idc either way. If it makes the sound you want in your recording use it. but use the real thing where you can. (i don’t wanna be hearing no midi saxophones)

30: purchasing music or illegally downloading music?

I do my best to buy my music, especially if I can get my hands on it direct from the people who made it (ie at their gigs and stuff) so they don’t get screwed around by itunes or whatever when the sell online.

31: three interesting facts about you and classical music

I had a lot to do with classical music up until this year (now I do mainly jazz yo)

My lyf tips for orchestra: watch the conductor, blend with your section and use your ears.

Yeah I don't know how suited it is as a performance degree but it works well for me because it means I can do music a bit more relaxed and have more of a focus on education which is what I want to do. Yeah, if you go trolling though I have a list of things I've played and soprano is on there. I don't like the curriculum much myself, but my thought is, why not try and make it something that is worth teaching? I'll be sure to let you know. I think it's fairly new there so it'll probably be a double learning process for me and the uni as they have more jazz students (I think Sandy Evans teaches there, so we'll see). Good luck with everything!

Yeah, I agree. It would be great if music could be taught in a way that appeals to kids and they actually learn something (cos I know I got pretty much nothing out of the music 1 course) but I think it still mightn’t be for me, or at least not in the classroom. Regardless, I wish you the best of luck with it all!

Yeah the con was my first preference, it is so competitive though as you know! Life 5 people out of some stupid number. I'm hoping to do Music with Education as a double degree. Teaching is what I really want to do with life, and I have a lot of flexibility at UNSW (and their education course is extremely reputable) so I can switch between Soprano and Tenor sax (and soon alto) AND do jazz. I'm considering re-auditioning next year but we'll see how things pan out. Are you going to work?

Awesome! I love teaching music but I’ve always hated the music curriculum and the way it’s taught in school. I didn’t realise you were a soprano player. That’s awesome. be sure to let me know how UNSW goes, because I know virtually nothing about jazz there. I just got a recommendation about their classical department.

Yeah, I’m definitely going to work. I actually have to buy myself a tenor sax (I’ve been borrowing one from my school since saxophone, and they let me keep it for the holidays while I try to find one, but I’ll have to return it soon) and on top of that I’ll be paying for my own sax lessons. So I’ve got a job lined up at a cafe and I’m going to see if I can get some flute students for extra cash.
