nobody tells you how to handle death, do they? the suddenness and the finality of it all, how you expect it amongst some, and NOT AT ALL for those close to you, as if the heart was deceitful, above all things. youth makes her clumsy, makes her less able and understanding of how to comfort her friend, and alice knows, that gwen is hurting. maybe that's the stranger part, tongue moving between parted lips for a giggle ; and then a laugh. it's like she can't help herself, but alice, she moves to eat up the distance, her arms folding around the other girl, fast.

"there you are~" her voice, sing-song bright, without even an ounce of artificial sweetener within it. "guess who's been collecting up your homework? you and me, baby, we got a library date to come!" an arm loops though hers, and off they go! she doesn't want to make it seem like gwen's ANY DIFFERENT now. she's got enough people looking after her with sympathetic stares, and questions that they don't want to ask? "i brought snacks." gwen doesn't look like she's been eating much. " and i was like, thinking how we could do the presentation for the end of the project that got assigned, and like... i have some good ideas too, if you want to go over it."

they stay like that FOR HOURS at the library. a place that they're often at into the after hours, alice, not wanting to be home, and gwen, wanting to stay on top. it's like old rituals, with a normalcy that perhaps didn't suit them right now. alice, humming softly, kicking her legs back and forth ; watching gwen from over the pages. waiting, waiting, for that moment, when...

" i can finally breathe again. "

there - a break! she smiled again, leaning into her hand. "oh yeah?" grabbing the bottle of water that she carted around with her from class to class, unscrewing the top for a sip. "do you want to like, TALK ABOUT IT, or do you want to talk about ANYTHING BUT?"

ada stops in her tracks. gwen stacey. she's the girl who joined from the internship team. brilliant, of course, and oddly connected to the son of oscorp's leader, and worth keeping tabs on. there's something interesting brewing within the labs here, an obvious point for which ada had been deployed to join herself, a transfer from one of the other labs. A SECRET PROJECT has been brewing for years, and she's been 'hired' to help cover a critical point within it... as so arranged. but these turns of playing scientist came with both the regular and the mundane points of the job, which also included...

taking care of the staff close to her team. or, rather, perhaps it was more accurate to say that when someone pulled at her nerves, she had a rather good outlet for which to demonstrate it. gwen reminds her of her in a way, before things got COMPLICATED. she wanted to do big things with that brain of hers, to build, to inspire, to save others. it's a good goal, isn't it. too bad that good doesn't sell, and good doesn't 'protect', though, ada could hardly say that protection was ever needed at the bio-terrorism levels that the governments she's worked for sought. and when an older, more senior member of the team had talked down to gwen for something that the girl had been right on, well...

someone had left in tears, at least, and it hadn't been the two of THEM.

"of course." ada's tone was clipped, professional, her heels turning her around to face her, slowly, a thin smile forming on her face. "DR MORRIS was out of line. even if you'd been wrong, which you weren't, he shouldn't have been speaking down to you like that. it's unprofessional, and oscorp doesn't stand for that." oh, does it sound like she's drank the company kool aide yet? it's all about appearances - and she knew how to twist that well. "are you alright? him aside. i know... those moments can be uncomfortable. i'm sorry you had to go through that."

Brows furrow in discomfort, head bowing down to stare at the black converse he wore for a moment before raising his head to look her in the eye. He hadn't meant to upset her, it's not what he was trying to do at all. He made a promise and he needed to keep it. If not for himself, than for her.

Lab coat and royal purple short skirt; was the hemline even regulation? The editor didn't seem to be hounded for a reprint or touch-up, and, honestly? Dress codes are so puritan. Would Peter look as stunning in his best-friend's particular choice of semi-saucy wear below the chemist frocks though? Debatable, he'd say.
