Via @mount_vernon - By the 1850s, George Washington’s beloved home had fallen into ruin. This combined image shows the Mansion both in its former dilapidated state circa 1858, and it current preserved state. (swipe to see the original 1858 photograph) . Upon learning of the estate’s condition, Ann Pamela Cunningham founded the Mount Vernon Ladies’ Association of the Union in 1853. The organization quickly raised enough money to buy the Mansion and 200 acres and in the 1860s began preserving it. . The post-Washington balustrades and side porches have now been removed, and most importantly, there is no more need for ship masts or timbers to support the piazza roof. #throwbackthursday #tbt #gwmountvernon #georgewashington #thenandnow #beforeandafter #historichomes Tell us your story and share your homes' photos at BrickStory.com. #BrickStory, #storystylesoul, #architecture #historicpreservation, #househistory, #architecture, #designer, #preservation, #historichome, #oldhouselove, #realestate #americanhome, #vintagelife, #americanhistory, #americanpride, #mountvernon, #ancestry (at George Washington's Mount Vernon)
