So, I likely wouldn't have said anything, but, the sentiment has popped up on my twitter timeline three times now in the past two weeks alone which is three times as many times as I'd prefer to have seen it without going looking for it, and I can't keep using my friends and partner as a sounding board in dms. So. Here this will go, and hopefully help work out my feelings on the matter.

To be very blunt and to the point: I don't greatly like the argument 'no man should be a gynocologist'.

On the surface of the argument - it reads as what people who are making the argument *think* they're saying. 'I don't want someone who cannot potentially empathize with my pain and issues and has a higher chance of being predatory/unsafe/dismissive/dishonest having access to me in a very personal and vulnerable environment. I would like my preferences to be understood and validated' and that?

That is perfectly valid and completely understandable. You *should* be able to see the person who makes you feel most comfortable and heard when seeing a doctor! You deserve that right!

And the horror stories - they are horrific, and I believe them. To the people who disbelieve anyone would go through all that time and money for medical school just for the chance to hurt other people - it happens, and it's real. Listen to the victims. Some people are dedicated to being evil.

But. All this is not the point I'm trying to make.

When you use terminology like 'literally no man should ever be a gynocologist' or 'why would any man choose to be a gyno when he doesn't understand what we go through?' you are taking part in terf rhetoric, if not downright terf ideology, and bioessentialism.

Yes, yes you are. I have just stated above, you have the right to choose who you want to see for your medical issues and wellbeing. That's not in question. If you don't feel comfortable with one, then you should see someone you do feel comfortable with.

But perpetuating the narrative of 'man = penis-having' automatically in these arguments helps no one, and actively harms people like me.

An AFAB transmasc nonbinary person who has had to and will have to see a gynocologist for my health, who sees these word choices and feels passed over, and sometimes actively attacked.

Some times its just people being forgetful - and aren't they very privileged to be so. Oher times, a transmasc individual like myself will point out this type of terfish language and get slapped down for it. Told they are invalidating women's experiences, told to shut up, told we are hijacking the post. It's sometimes just rude, and sometimes very revealing of what a lot of cis women think of trans folks.

I'm finding myself running out of steam for this post, because thinking about it for too long makes me tire and mad and sad and frustrated beyond measure.

So, to reiterate: If a doctor of any kind makes you feel hurt or hurts you, or even if you just don't feel like they're the right fit for your care, for any reason, you have the right to feel that way, and you have the right to seek someone else out. That is not what people are upset about. At least, not most people like me that I've seen on these posts.

But please don't forget about us in your arguments when making them so black and white.

Yall, I fucking hate our healthcare out here where I live.

I have a great general practitioner and she needed to refer me to a gyno. If I go outside the hospital system she's in, Ill play hell getting that referral to the doctor it needs to get to. So, I agree to stay in the system. I just met the woman for the first time today and geez.

The nurse reviewing my medical stuff didnt even see that I had just had an exam done 3 weeks prior and was prepared to do it again. Keep in mind, its all in the same computer system, no requesting or transferring records. I bring this up and shes like "Oh, I probably shouldve checked that first." Ya think??

Then, the gyno comes in and we discuss birth control options. I am currently on one method and I want to switch to another because of health risk reasons associated with my current med. She looked at me like I was crazy and gave me contradicting information about the risks of the med, going against my general practitioner, the one perscribing it to me. Thats fine and all, only if I didnt already do my own research and know my general practioner was right and the gynos information put me at more risk.

Then, shes trying to find another reason for me wanting to change and says to me "Well, most women want to switch because this med can cause weight gain and moodiness" Heres the bit yall: I weigh about 270 pounds and am about 5'7". I dont look little. How fucking rude! Not only that, but there are a HOST of other potential side effects and you choose to mention those to me?! Thanks, asshole.

Then, she tells me she needs to check me for STIs. I recently had an exam where, due to my lack of sexual activity, they chose not to test for them. I dont mind getting tested in the slightest, but I tried asking why they didnt do it and why it needed to be done today. I just wanted some answers since I know Im not an expert on these things. She tells me "Oh, yeah, I dont know why they didnt do it. We do them for everyone here. I totally believe what youve told me about your sexual activity, but Ive been duped before, so we like to make sure" That is the WORST way to word that answer. Thanks for accusing me of lying to you TO MY FACE. I understand the reasoning behind it, but the lack of consideration for the patients feelings was really unnecessary.

Thesres a few more rude red flags that she's not really listening to me, like not taking no for an answer when discussing birth control options until the fourth time and not paying attention to what I said my cycle was in relation to our next scheduled appointment, but the final big thing I didnt like was the physical exam. She wasnt very gentle and didnt seem to consider how uncomfortable I am, despite me making noise and clenching my muscles. And, right before it started, she brought in a lady I didnt recognize and didnt introduce her until after she had left and I was about to leave the office. She knows Im a new patient and shes about to show off my vagina to anyone in the room. It would be fucking nice to know whos taking a look.

What a goddamn mess, I fucking hate it here. I was treated like a woman, not a person. I know this is pretty common, but this is why Ive avoided the gyno for this long.

This is not good! ALL women need to have routine pap smears to ensure health.  Also, DO NOT think that having gotten a HPV vaccine means that you can forgo these tests. It does not mean you can’t get a different strain of HPV and cervical cancer. Lesbian women are less likely than heterosexual and bisexual women to get timely pap smears, according to a new paper from sociologists at Rice University.                                

"Cancer-Screening Utilization Among U.S. Women: How Mammogram and Pap-Test Use Varies Among Heterosexual, Lesbian and Bisexual Women" examines the relationship between cancer tests and sexual orientation among 2,273 lesbian, 1,689 bisexual and 174,839 heterosexual women interviewed in 15 U.S. states between 2000 and 2010.

Alexa Solazzo, a graduate student in the Department of Sociology at Rice and the study's lead author, said a possible explanation for the results may be linked to birth control. Women who use contraceptives are often required by doctors to have annual pap smears.

"Many doctors require women who seek a birth-control prescription to have had a recent pap test," Solazzo said. "Women who don't have sex with men might theoretically have less of a need for birth control than women who do have sex with men (i.e., heterosexual or bisexual women). Thus, they may be less likely to seek care at an OB-GYN and receive a pap test."

I don't even have any trauma around it and it just makes me woozy and shaky.

About the same as when I get a pap smear though it hurts a lot less than that.
