an eye roll was all danny dignified the statement with for a moment, as he decided just how heavily to judge shrike’s words. if it took longer than one might expect, it was only due to the disorientation of looking at the man before him and trying to replace his association with the word ‘ adversary ’ — with what, he wasn’t sure. ‘ ally ’ seemed like a premature half-truth at best and yet ‘ warden ’ was too harsh, even in thought — before deciding that titles could wait.

he let his face fall into a well practiced pose, bemused half-smile and lifted brow, and gave a half-laugh.

“ you really think that, dylan? ” he asked, wondering idly what the scope of ‘ you’re ’ was. he and merritt? jack? criminals in general? “ that’s pretty narrow minded. you can’t possibly expect me to believe you don’t see shades of grey. ” not that he’d ever purport to reside in the grey area himself, he wasn’t so deluded as to see himself as some white knight or as someone who hadn’t really had any other choice, but that wasn’t the point.

he’d admit to having been slightly aggravated on the spot --- danny has a way of making shades of grey spin around in front of your eyes until you think you see colour, and dylan does not appreciate the constant attempts to cloud his judgement --- but it doesn’t necessarily mean he’s wrong. if dylan hated the way danny could talk people into carrying him to the finish line when others had to walk and fight and still not get there in one lifetime... the company he kept was at least twice as bad. thrice. “ how exactly does colluding with known art criminals that excuse themselves out the second an fbi agent walks in count as shades of GREY? ” ‘ known ’ was perhaps an exaggeration --- technically, only jack was in the system: any attempt to track down merritt’s life seemed to end as soon as it started --- but dylan knew about them, and that meant it was close enough to the truth.

a sigh to calm himself down an inch, then an explanation: “ life isn’t supposed to work the way YOU and your---... ” dylan makes a vague gesture towards the recently closed door to avoid defining danny and jack’s relationship, “ people live it. have you ever actually worked for a living, or has life always been about stealing masterpieces and conning old women for you? ”

jealousy? not at all.
