Cleaning materials containing acids can be combined with sulfur-containing compounds including pesticides and insecticides to create hydrogen sulphide. Hyrogen sulphide is a particularly toxic gas that can induce very rapid CNS and respiratory distress. It is also an irritant that affects the skin and mucous membranes. There is no proven treatment to hydrogen sulphide poisoning, so it is used in h2s safety services. Treatment usually includes the promotion of respiratory and cardiovascular processes. Unfortunately when I drew the initial H2S sample from the tubing it was well above lethal levels requiring someone on the crew to mask up and go under air to blow the well off. Despite the years of experience on their crew I was surprised to find that not a single one of them had ever been fit tested or been through an H2S safety course despite working consistently out of an area known for high levels of H2S. When I asked them about it they didn't seem to think H2S was a big deal as they typically don't sample a well before they blow it off. Had we not been there it could have resulted in a serious incident. I can not stress this enough, anytime you are working in an environment that has the potential for poison gas or particulates in the air it is imperative that you have the proper training and fit testing done before going to work so that you know what equipment you need to safely do your job as well as what to do in the event of a crisis.
