It does look like some of these guys (hackers) were just fools. The PayPal attack in particular. It looks like these bozos must have just said 'Cool, an attack on PayPal. You can use my machine.' I think it makes it a lot less likely that that people will join the next digital lynch mob.
Former Homeland Security official Stewart Baker • Discussing the nature of the 14 people arrested yesterday in connection with a wide-scale attack on PayPal and other services late last year — a form of retribution, reportedly coordinated by Anonymous for PayPal taking away Wikileaks' main source of funding. A couple other folks were arrested, too, in a series of raids that represent the largest law-enforcement response to the spate of large-scale hackings that have cropped up since late last year. Don't Fuck With The Hackers
If we've learned anything from hackers we've learned that they can take over pretty much anything within a moments notice-- so don't fuck with them.
Hackers Anonymous have recently gone after Sony after developments in the court case with George Hotz. If you don't remember, Hotz was the hacker who figured out how to break the master code of the Playstation3-- allowing it to become usable for programs OTHER than the ones Sony has made. Much like a common computer system operates now.
Hotz was infamous for jailbreaking the first iPhone at the age of 17-- he's now being requested by a San Francisco Judge to turn over his computers as well as his PayPal records to determine whether or not he received donations to encourage his PS3 hacking.
Here is the video Hackers Anonymous left for Sony after taking over the Sony website as well as the PlayStation website last night. (It looks like Sony has finally regained control of both of those websites...... for now)
