LICKING HER LIPS, eyes drop, avoiding his gaze. she stands completely still, breathing shallow breaths. tears burn, but never fall. they were good together once. charlie made her smile in ways no one had before or since. even in the most intimate of moments, his breath on her neck, laughter vibrating against her chest ; she could still feel it sometimes, if she tried hard enough. he grounded her. inspired her. knew her. the pure joy behind viridescent eyes reminded her of home, but she hasn’t seen that for awhile now.
LAUGHTER STILL ECHOES when she’s alone, but their walls have turned grey. he was her best friend until the illness began to take over, wedging them further and further apart. in moments of lucidity, they could almost be themselves, but too many times, she let herself hope that this was it. too many times, she convinced herself he was better. she’s not so naïve anymore. innocent playfulness dissipated, replaced with heartache and bruises –– and tonight, she almost lost her career for him. the only thing she sees in his eyes now is his disease.
SHAKING HER HEAD, teeth clench. she forces herself to look him in the eye. “ don’t, ” she repeats, softer this time. “ you were always enough, but you need help, charlie. you disappear for days on end and when you’re here, it’s like you don’t know me most of the time. i know –– i know it’s not your fault –– but PLEASE. i can’t keep doing this. i can’t keep covering for you. ” lips quiver. her voice breaks. “ i miss you. ”
