Joyce! Here’s a bit about her:
- Joyce stress-smokes. A lot. She always tried to hide it from her kids, but they obviously caught on to it. Because she’s gone through quite a bit of stress, she smokes a lot more now than she used to.
- Obviously, Joyce is a mother, through and through. Even if there’s no big, scary thing going on, she is a listener, caretaker, protector. She’ll be there for anything, anyone.
- Of course, she is also a worrier, but she tries to hide it.
- Time away was good for her, but it didn’t heal all wounds. She worked as a store manager and took a lot of time off to be home with her kids. She feels like she settled in a way, but it wasn’t home. Something pulled them back to Hawkins after a few years passed without another incident - but it wasn’t just that. Joyce realized that if something happened there, she had to be there.
- Now that she’s back in Hawkins, she’s back to her old position as a retail clerk. The general store has more traffic now that the mall burned down.
- Joyce is the strongest person you’ll know, but she is also the sweetest soul.
- It’s Hopper. After him, there was no thinking of other men.

After the Byers family moved away, Jonathan had a hard time letting go of the things that he and his family went through and felt that moving worsened his trauma rather than helped (but of course he doesn’t blame his mother, she was trying to do the right thing and move them away from the chaos that is Hawkins)
Jonathan drifted away from the group as his anxiety worsened. This included his relationship with Nancy, although he didn’t want it to-- as the two graduated from high school and went on to college, the calls and letters between them grew shorter and shorter until there was nothing left to stay. He still loves Nancy dearly, of course, and is afraid of what will happen between them when they finally see each other again.
His distancing himself from the people he knew in Hawkins is partially due to him wanting to move on with his life, although as stated before, it’s hard for him because he is so connected to the upside down. Though he would never abandon his family and never, ever blame Will for what happened, he feels that he can never get away from the “pretentious weirdo freak Byers whose brother came back to life” label.
Also, he knows he’s a better person than his dad ever was, but he’s afraid that he will somehow turn into the lying, cheating, dirty scumbag that Lonnie is.
Jonathan worked his butt off to save up money for college, even if he could only afford to go to a local community college for the time being. He studied photography, of course, and was content with what he could achieve. He didn’t look a gift horse in the mouth, especially if he was getting a decent education.
When Joyce decided to move back to Hawkins, Jonathan reluctantly went back with his family. Although he was excited to see all of his old friends (and flame) again, he was terrified of being pulled back into the utter chaos of the upside down and mindflayer business.
While Jonathan wants Will to grow up and be his own person and hopefully move on from everything that has happened, he is still very protective of his little brother.
He’s a sweet guy who just wants everyone to be safe, but he feels like he’s been boxed into a corner his whole life and no longer knows what he wants.
hello my lovelies! my name is breanna and i play melissa and jonathan! melissa is an original character (and a russian scientist that worked in the lab under starcourt) that was brought over from a previous roleplay that shut down. So here is quite a bit of her backstory to get a good feel of her character! I’m almost always available on discord if you’d like to plot!
Melissa was born in Kazan, Russia.
She had to work twice as hard to be considered as smart as the men around her in the field of science and was often ridiculed (and occasionally silenced) for what she was trying to achieve, which happened to be inter-dimensional travel. Melissa always believed that there was proof of other worlds existing within her own, she just didn’t have the resources to test those theories.
In late 1983, she was approached by Soviet agents while she was interning for a professor at Moscow State University. They began asking her what she knew about ‘alternate dimensions’ and if she knew how to create laser-focused weapons. How they caught wind of her experiments or her internship under the professor, she didn’t know, but she didn’t hesitate in giving them her notes on the theories of inter-dimensional travel, which had been collecting dust for a while. Instead of being praised for her theories, she was accused of being a spy and arrested.
Initially, they were going to torture her for the rest of the information she had come up with until a Soviet general stepped in. He decided that killing her would be a waste of talent, and instead she could be considered an asset in constructing the ‘keys,’ allowing her to live. In return, she was transported to Kamchatka Peninsula, where she would work with Dr. Alexei and his collages on the ray that would (try) to be used to open a ‘gate’ between worlds.
The keys never worked, ever. It was failure after failure after failure, and the threat of being killed for this loomed over her at all times. It wasn’t until June 28, 1984 when the ray acquired too much energy and exploded, frying all of the scientists in the room with it, did she realize just how much she wanted out of this life and wished she had just been killed instead. The same Soviet general that spared her life ordered Dr. Alexei and the rest of them to create a key that worked in years time or they would all receive the same fate of the fried scientists.
They worked tirelessly to find some way to open the gate, going to multiple locations throughout Russia where inter-dimensional activity was deemed the strongest, but nothing worked. One day, she recalled a conversation she had with one of the scientists that had been killed in the explosion, about that town in the United States that had somehow closed the portal. Thinking on this caused a light bulb to go off over her head, and she informed Alexei and the general that they should try opening it there (Hawkins, Indiana) instead.
That also may or may not have been her taking a chance on fleeing to the United States without being detected.
They agreed to test this theory of hers, which also meant that if moving their operations to Hawkins, Indiana didn’t work, she (and Alexei) would be killed for it, and the rest is history.
Post-Starcourt:
In the few hours between two teenagers working in the mall being found in the lab and the mindflayer destroying Starcourt and almost everything in it, Melissa escaped the lab and faked her death so that she couldn’t be found by either her government or the United States’ government.
She laid low in a neighboring town as news crews and tourists began descending into Hawkins, her curiosity for the town getting the better of her. Truthfully, the Russians didn’t know what was waiting for them on the other side of the gate, only that their military was blackmailing them into opening it to get ahead of the United States.
When the truth about Starcourt and all of the deaths that came with it finally seemed to blow over, Melissa returned to Hawkins, eager to finally live the American dream that she had fantasized about for years as well as get to the bottom of why Hawkins, Indiana was so involved in experimentation.
Melissa just wants to put her tricky past behind her and live the life that she was meant to live, but she can’t just forget about every evil thing she saw and participated in, so now she tries to make amends for everything she believes was her fault. After all, it was her idea for the Russian operation to move to Hawkins.
Gabrielle is someone new that I picked up for this group. It’s always nice to have an original character that you can get creative with! Below is a little about my girl, Gabrielle Mitchell:
Gabrielle is a 23 year old officer with the Hawkins PD, recruited from the police academy
she’s a kind-hearted girl who wants to make the world a better place
as a woman in the 80′s, she’s struggling to make her mark in a male-dominated field
she resents being sent to Hawkins just a little bit, especially when she comes from Indianapolis
she filled an open position one year after the summer of ‘85, when half the town went missing
being a Hawkins police officer is anything but exciting
she spends most of her free time searching the town for answers (where did everyone go? what’s going on in this town? can she really believe what the chief is telling her?)
as an outsider, she struggles to make friends, but that doesn’t mean she won’t try
she’s lived in Hawkins for almost a year now but still has a room at the motel where she lives
