Rewatching “Good Will Hunting” for the first time in a long time
1. There’s a lot of Elliot Smith in this. Have I just never noticed?
2. Gus van Sant was such a fucking weird choice for a director for this film. This is probably his most conventional film but it’s still unnecessarily bizarre.
3. This fight scene is a big example. I get it. They want to show the violence in the south Boston neighborhood but why is it like a dreamlike sequence? It should have just been a typical gritty shot with a handheld. I guess it’s more original and memorable this way but I’ve always thought it was fucking weird.
4. Ugh Ben Affleck’s hair. Ugh Ben Affleck’s face. Ugh. Ben Affleck.
5. Danny Elfman was a weird choice for a composer too. The score mostly sounds like him trying to rip off the score from “Dead Poets Society” meanwhile he has that same jarring string section he used whenever Catwoman was on screen in “Batman Returns.”
6. Will is supposed to be 20? Fuck my life.
7. Who the fuck is this dude that follows Jerry around everywhere? I get it, he’s his TA or research assistant or something but he is the BIGGEST KISSASS I have ever seen. I half expect him to blow Stellan Skarsgård while Will is proving string theory in the background.
8. Jerry’s a huge sleazebag. He’s constantly hitting on underclassman when he isn’t making a huge entrance into a bar. Fuck you and your decorative scarf, Jerry.
9. Minnie Driver is so adorkable in this and I love it.
10. Robin Williams is BY FAR the best part of this film. Easily one of my all time favorite performances.
