i actually feel sick to my stomach.

i was finally reaching a point where i was starting to feel comfortable with myself and who i am as a person and the things that i like.

i was starting to feel less like a fucked up monster and more like an actual person.

and now they’re trying to take that all away.

I was originally too scared to post this but my sibling talked me into it so here’s my trauma-informed analysis of that one scene in The Lego Movie where Emmet confronts Lord Business that may or may not be accurate (which is to say I don’t think this is the only correct interpretation of that scene, it’s just my interpretation

ok here we go:

sometimes I go back and rewatch that scene from the lego movie where emmet confronts president/lord business because the soundtrack is honestly beautiful

but something I never got when I was younger was why the kid (Finn)’s dad hugged him after asking him “If the construction guy said something to president business, what would he say?” (assuming the kid quite literally word for word said what Emmet said in the next sequence, and maybe he didn’t *exactly,* but I think he did or at least something similar to that effect given the context of the conversation that he and his father were having)

and upon rewatching this scene, I kind of realized that that hug wasn’t initiated because his dad was trying to apologize necessarily, but because Finn may have inadvertently healed some of his father’s childhood trauma.

Think about it. This adult man has an area, off limits to his children, where he can do something he enjoys with total control. To me, that reads as someone who had no or very little control when they were a child, and maybe even had a parent or family member who would use this thing that they very much enjoyed as a punishment (either by taking it away, or worse, destroying it).

Regardless, when the dad goes in to hug Finn, I think it was because what Finn said to him was something *he* needed to hear in regards to his own experiences. It read much less like a “I’m sorry I’ve been unreasonable this whole time, son” and more “My kid just said something so powerful and moving that words can’t express how I feel, so I’m going to express that through physical affection instead” (and this actually furthers my agenda that the father has trauma if he struggles to communicate in addition to him being overprotective of his hobbies/interests, to the point that he wasn’t even able to share them with his children, not because it wasn’t age appropriate, but because he needed to be in control)

and this revelation (?) just makes me like the lego movie even more tbh

a little while ago my sibling and I got sick so we binged a bunch of movies from the Ghibli catalogue and Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind has forever altered the chemistry of my brain

it is by no means perfect— there are things that I think Princess Mononoke handled more elegantly in terms of theme and messaging, and there are times when it’s clunky and awkward (I’m not a big fan of characters that are used as mouthpiece for the creators to explain what’s happening on screen)

but man, the world-building is INSANE okay— the whole world feels so rich and all of the characters feel so wonderfully human

I am absolutely late to the party and there are tons of people who have put into words their love for the film better than I have, but I wanted to share my appreciation for the film just because it means that much to me

and also I love the ohmu and their spaghetti feelers
