so, i've been seeing a few people confused as to why Heathers is a movie that is considered to be decently popular with gay audiences. the confusions are mostly that there are no gay or lesbian characters, and that there is homophobic dialogue in the movie
but it's a cult classic for a reason, and so i thought we could talk about the cliffnotes.
it is about being an outsider in a world that demands conformity.
the high school's white american suffocating hierarchy reflects how it feels to be gay navigating heteronormative society. the movie follows veronica rebelling against it.
it's about extremely glamorous girls with exaggerated and luxurious silhouettes. it is campy in its language and death scenes and costuming. what teenager plays croquet? and who says 'corn nuts' when they die?
the movie mocks stereotypes and american nostalgia in john hugh's movies. generally seen as a deconstruction of reaganite society in general. it says even adults are stupid and don't understand the teens. it validates rebellion.
and then, lastly, it has a goddamn musical based on it.
