The Slovenian song "Namesto koga roža cveti" was written by Vlado Kreslin as part of the soundtrack for the movie Halgato, directed by Andrej Mlakar. The film and soundtrack were inspired by Feri Lainšček's novel, which is a bildungsroman that follows the lives of two Roma boys.
My translation of the lyrics:
On some nights when I dream with the storks,
silently I stand in the dark,
feet raised above the bog.
When a sunbeam bites through the clouds,
we arouse sharply from our dreams,
our new wishes, drowning in shrouds,
will fly towards sunlight's beams.
Instead of whom do soft flowers bloom?
Whose place on Earth do I hold?
Which skin becomes the sweetest perfume?
Whose song should my voice help to unfold?
Instead of whom do soft flowers bloom?
Whose place on Earth do I hold?
Which skin becomes the sweetest perfume?
Whose song should my voice help to unfold?
If the soil underneath my blue grass
some will shed tears, silent and crass,
some will drink honeydew.
Instead of whom do soft flowers bloom?
Whose place on Earth do I hold?
Which skin becomes the sweetest perfume?
Whose song should my voice help to unfold?
