apparently a rare deep sea octopus (haliphron atlanticus, aka the seven armed/blob octopus) got caught by shrimp fishermen in Skagerrak and it's all over the news here, but the swedish name for it is taking me out. Apparently it's Spökkrake. Now, "spök" is easy, it just means ghost which yeah, apparently it's sort of jellyfish like, but then "krake". Now, technically krake is apparently an old/rare way to say kraken (as in the giant squid), however it also has a second meaning that's actually used in modern speech. So behold:

No.8: the Seven-Armed Octopus Haliphron atlanticus

This cool lil friend actually has eight arms! Imagine that! It’s also one of the largest Octopuses and can grow up to 12ft/4m and weight around 165lbs/75kg. That’s one big octopus! The only one bigger/as big is the Giant Atlantic Octopus.

The name comes from the fact that the males of the species has one arm (used for reproduction) that’s smaller and kept curled up by their eye. Since this is harder to see they look like they only have seven arms! How cheeky!

Not only does this elusive octopus feed on jellies, it hangs onto their stinging tentacles and uses them for defense. Thanks, deep sea exploration!

Seven-arm Octopus (Haliphron atlanticus)

...a large species of octopus that is the sole member of its family Alloposidae. Seven-arm octopodes have been collected in both the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean, but the true extent of their range is not well known. Haliphron atlanticus can grow quite large, to the point where they are one of the two largest known octopus species, with some individuals reaching lengths of around 3.5 m (11 ft)!
