Theater Thursday: Manuscript
Our Pop-Exhibit featuring African-Americans in the Arts was a big success. One of the most popular artifacts in the exhibit was this manuscript for the Hall Johnson play “Run, Little Chillun.” The manuscript seems to exist by itself within the collection with no related letters, playbills, etc.. The folder that contains this manuscript describes the piece as being from 1933 and also mentions the Lyric Theater in New York. The script is part of our M. Eleanor Fitzgerald Papers (UWM Mss 13). Fitzgerald was a manager at the Provincetown Playhouse in New York for several years.
According to the Wikipedia page for Hall Johnson, this play appeard on Broadway in 1933 before moving to California as part of the Federal Theater Project.
One of the things that many of the visitors to our exhibit brought up were the handwritten changes made to the dialect within the script. Note in the page above “that” and “the” are changed to “dat” and “de.” We wondered if this was Hall Johnson’s hand or someone else making these changes. Also note the change to the title of the play from “Salvation” to “Run, Little Chillun.”
Emory University has a Hall Johnson Collection maybe someone who has access to that collection can let us know if the handwriting appearing in this manuscript compares to Johnson’s handwriting.

Johnson was a native of Athens, Georgia, where his father was a bishop in the African Methodist Episcopal Church. He attended the Knox Institute as a boy, and later took courses at Atlanta University, the Hahn School of Music, Juilliard, and the University of…
