FUCK THE HAND AIM FOR THE NECK!

trans rage ft. hallows. due to the recent Events this song has been resonating with me a lot.

It's samhain so I'm sending love and warm wishes as we, in the northern hemisphere, move into the darkest part of the year. Samhain is when I really turn my attention towards winter and think about what I need to do to prepare. There are always practical preparations needed - getting our boiler serviced, stocking up on vitamin D, looking for a new pair of boots. But this process is about something else, too. How can I as a mammal, a creature, as the person I am with the needs and emotions I experience, best prepare for the colder, darker months?

This is what works for me:

Acknowledging and, as best I can, accepting, that there's less light, that the days are shorter and darker and colder, that there's less evidence of growth and life in the natural world

Embracing/taking advantage of these conditions whenever I can by having dark, cosy evenings wrapped up in blankets, listening to music by candlelight; by spending more time at home doing enjoyable things like cooking stews and baking; by allowing myself to really rest by semi-hibernating

At the same time, when the weather is bright or at least dry, getting outdoors - going for walks, basking in the pale winter sunlight, doing bits of winter garden care, saying hello to the birds and animals I see in the park

Making sure I don't get too insular - meeting up with a friend every now and again, having zoom chats with friends who live abroad, maybe even writing the occasional letter!
