Abyssal halosaur!

They tend to hold their elongated and slender pectoral fins upwards, which is theorised to help them with sensing motion! Their lateral line is also highly developed for this purpose, as there is no light in their deep ocean habitat of up to 3 500 meters (11 500 feet)!

Deep Sea Halosaur (genus Halosaurus), Hawaii

Exploring what is believed to be an old reef terrace edge north of Gardner Pinnacles. The objectives of this dive are to survey the terrace edge, which is now a 200-meter high narrow ridge, for corals and sponges, testing the hypothesis that high-density communities can be found on ridge topography.

From July 10 to September 30, a team of NOAA and external partners both at-sea and on shore will conduct mapping and remotely operated vehicle operations in the deep waters of the Hawaiian Archipelago, including the Papahānaumokuākea Marine National Monument and Johnston Atoll – part of the recently expanded Pacific Remote Islands Marine National Monument.

The halosaur (Aldrovandia affinis) is a relatively rare fish, typically found hovering over the bottom in water between 700–2,000m deep. It's usually only captured by specially designed deep-sea fishing gear during scientific research expeditions. Little is known about the halosaur, but its well-developed nasal organs, particularly among the males, seems to indicate that sense of smell is a means of communication between the sexes.

They are a member of the superorder Elopomorpha, which also includes tarpons and eels. Members of this group all look and behave differently as adults, but they all start life as a transparent larva known as a leptocephalus larva.
