It's Hamaguichi. He was the battle system creator and director for part one, so a lot of those transition scenes between stages were his idea. You know what battle transitions are, right?

He's very conscious of implementing Nojima's script to the best of his ability and he'll be the one juggling things which leaves Nomura free to focus on the overall look of the game, which is what he excels at most.

Hamaguichi loves FF7 and wants to make it the best remake possible. Lots of nostalgic scenes and new twists on the classic events that everyone loves. He's not changing anything. He wouldn't have the authority anyway. Nojima writes it, Nomura oversees and Kitase produces. They have final say.

We can add Hamaguichi and Toriyama to the list of devs who've said more than once that Remake is following OG and expanding the compilation with reimagined scenes for better and more complex storytelling.

L to R: Akihiro Hino, Yoshinori Kitase and Naoki Hamaguichi sat in for an interview segment (30/01/21) where they talked about 7R. Below are some of the main comments they made from a reliable source with the original and translation.

So, the story is the same, (Kitase said for the millionth time) and they just want to expand on OG. A lot of commenters watching this said they didn't care about having a massive open world to explore as long as the story is good. I agree. I don't care about exploring every corner of the planet, I want story led gameplay like part one. The story is the core of FF7, not the map.

Hopefully after repeating themselves for the millionth time people will start accepting that 7R is FF7. Aerith's gonna die, Zack's already dead, Cloud's in love with Tifa and they're gonna realise that in the lifestream and then act on their feelings under the highwind.
