House being the only one unable to say goodbye to Amber is really such a delicious win for tragedy enjoyers. Her death was random, unfair, and had so many different events that had to occur in precisely the right order for her to die.
But it was his decisions that led most directly to her death in House's mind; if he had just called a cab company or taken his cane with him, or if he had already paid the bartender and Amber could instead corral him to her car, things would have turned out fine.
And it was his finding out that her flu pills meant she was already dead that simultaneously solved the puzzle of her condition, and robbed him of any chance to say he was sorry. To hold her hand. To be there for Wilson to turn the machines off so that he could spend three more seconds holding her with both hands as she slipped away.
As absolutely great as I think both actors could have made a scene where they both get closure with one another, I don't think it ultimately would have changed House's hallucinations of Amber; I think it would have just given her more fuel to tear him apart more effectively. Like, "oh honey. Did you think telling me you're sorry for killing me actually made a difference??" And grabbing House by the chin and directing his gaze to Wilson, "do you think it made a difference for him? In the end he's still. Stuck. With. You."
It was worse that House was in a coma as she died, not because he couldn't get closure or be there for Wilson, but because everything bad that they were worried about happening to his damaged brain, did in fact happen. And that he lived despite all of it. What was unforgivable was that flu treatment medication took Amber from Wilson forever, but that his misanthropic best friend ended up fine after his brain bled out of his ear, had a near vicodin overdose while smelling clothes, had another overdose where is heart stopped on the bus while trying to recreate his memories, and literally jolted his brain with electricity after drilling through his skull until he seized and slipped into a coma. What's worse is she knew in under a minute after waking up from such a great trauma, with her heart not even beating, that she was dead and that her flu meds were why, after House & Co labored for days. That in the end she was smarter than all of them combined, and yet she was the one doomed by the narrative.
Really liked Amber as a character all through season four because she was smart, funny, hot, manipulative, loved fucking with House, brought so much comic relief to b-plots after she was fired, etcetc.
But I fell in love with Amber hard and fast during the mattress scene with Wilson because it is the first time we saw her through Wilson's eyes, not House's. We saw her manipulating the salesman and Wilson going along with it - something completely ordinary for Wilson in his two main relationships. After she leaves, House, who we've been told is just Amber but a man, incorrectly tells Wilson how Amber is manipulating him with respect to what bed he should get, how House would manipulate him. Wilson gets the bed that would make Amber (House) happy.
If this was a Wilson/House escapade it would end there but when they come home and Amber realizes he bought the mattress she wanted, we see the absolutely crucial way she and House are different. She clocks immediately that he's treating her just like his ex-wives, that he will come to resent her if he does everything only to make her happy, and tells him, "Don't you dare do that to me."
In her heart Amber believes not only that Wilson is capable of change, but that she is worth changing for. That even if Wilson thinks he wants something like the waterbed and is wrong they will still have ridiculous sex on that bed, laugh about it, and move on together.
In his heart, House not only doesn't believe Wilson (or anyone) is capable of change, but that he himself is not worth changing for. The most he can hope for is what he's offered his ex-wives, that every wrong decision Wilson makes will drive a wedge between them and cause House to lose him. That every moment House doesn't keep him guessing to pull him back from the cliff of boredom and normalcy is one moment closer to the end of their relationship.
That is why House has been so frantic about Amber and why she, while pissy and sometimes scheming, never for a moment thinks she'll be the one to lose Wilson.
I absolutely ADORE how Wilson is just reading the paper smiling to himself as House and Amber fight over him. Like for a guy who needs to be needed having the two most important people in his life fight over spending time with him, dude must have been so warm and fuzzy inside and probably at least half hard <3
